ABAC Receives $500,000 Grants

   Abraham Baldwin recently received two federal grants totaling $500,000 for two Upward Bound programs: Upward Bound Classic in the amount of $280,000 for the first year and Upward Bound Tiftarea in the amount of $220,000 for the first year. Both programs will begin operating under the new funding cycle on September 1.

   The Upward Bound Program, which is federally funded through the United States Department of Education, is a college preparatory program for high school students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the number of students who enroll in and graduate from post-secondary institutions.  Kenneth Newkirk directs the Upward Bound program at ABAC.

 

Dining Hall Staff Update

   Kristen Popham has been selected as the ARAMARK Dining Services Director at ABAC.  She will be joined by Dan Miller, the new Assistant Food Service Director, who will begin work on Friday.  Miller, formerly of Sylvester, currently lives in Fitzgerald with his wife, Carol.  Please stop by the Donaldson Dining Hall and welcome Dan. 

   Judy Shiflet and Dalla Nascimento will also join the ARAMARK dining staff for fall semester as student managers. 

   Popham said the weekly Faculty/Staff Luncheons will begin on Thursday in the Magnolia Room at 11:30 a.m.  The cost is $5.

 

Ambassadors Deadline August 26

   The deadline for students who want to apply for the ABAC Ambassadors program is Aug. 26 at noon.  Applicants should stop by the Public Relations Office on the second floor of Tift Hall to pick up application information.

 

The Lucky Nine!

   Congratulations to the nine prize winners who guessed correctly the number of slides in President Mike Vollmer’s annual PowerPoint presentation at the Fall Conference.  Each winner received an ABAC umbrella.  The winners were Shirley Wilson, Mike Curry, Earl Bennett, Ran Fredell, Diantha Ellis, Brenda Doss, Kay Weeks, Bobbie Robinson, and Tom Call. 

 

Welcome to the Fall Term!

   Fall classes begin today for an expected record enrollment at Abraham Baldwin.  Classes will extend through Dec. 8.  Final exams will be held Dec. 9-11.  Graduation is set for Dec. 16 at 6 p.m.  The Labor Day holiday will occur on Sept. 1, and the fall break will take place on Oct. 13-14.

   Highlights of the semester include the Cordell Distinguished Lecture feature Anthony Grooms on Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carlton Center, the Sunbelt Ag Expo at Spence Field near Moultrie on Oct. 14-16, the Baldwin Players production on Nov. 6-8, the Beauty Revue on Nov. 11, the Concert Band & Concert Choir Fall Concert on Nov. 20, and the First Tuesday Concerts on Sept. 2, Oct. 7, and Nov. 4.

 

ABAC is a Finalist

   ABAC has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2003 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award Program.  Sue Wilson coordinated the ABAC effort.  The award will be presented at the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta on Nov. 5.  Andrew Young will be the guest speaker. 

 

ABAC Faculty Promoted

   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia recently approved the promotions of 11 faculty members at ABAC effective Aug. 1.

   Julie Conner, Dr. Paul Foote, Susan Johnson, and Lori Pearman were promoted to the rank of assistant professor from instructor.  Eric Cash, Geoff Clement, Dr. Renata Elad, Anthony Fitzgerald, Dr. John Galyean, and Dr. Sukanya (Su) Senapati were promoted to the rank of associate professor from assistant professor.  Dr. Gail Dillard was promoted to the rank of professor from associate professor.

 

Tenure Approved for ABAC Faculty

   The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia recently approved the tenure of six faculty members at ABAC effective Aug. 1.  Those receiving tenure were Donna Campbell, Geoff Clement, Dr. John Galyean, Dr. Malcolm Rainey, Alice (Kitty) Ray, and Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Thornton.

 

First Tuesday Series September 2

   The First Tuesday Performance Series will begin its second season at ABAC on Sept. 2. The series, which debuted last year, will once again feature regional professional artists in concert in the Chapel of All Faiths on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.

   Individual tickets for the performances may be purchased at the door. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for students. ABAC students are admitted free with student ID.  Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of these one-hour performances offered each month. For additional information about the First Tuesday Concert Series, contact Dr. Susan Roe, First Tuesday Program Coordinator, at 386-3097.

   The first of this year’s seven concerts will be a free concert featuring the ABAC music faculty.

 

ABAC Welcomes New Faculty & Staff

   The start of the fall semester spells change for 32 new faculty and staff members at Abraham Baldwin. In addition to a host of newcomers, some ABAC faculty and staff members have changed positions within the college.

   The Division of Humanities welcomed Maria Cahill, Instructor of English; Robert Carpenter, Instructor of Spanish; Elizabeth Cranford, Temporary Full-Time Instructor of English; Keith Perry, Instructor of Speech Communication; and Michael R. Williams, Temporary Full-Time Instructor of English.

   The Division of Nursing and Health Services has added Troy Spicer, Assistant Professor and Nurse Practitioner; Robin Crumley and Dana Simons, Full-Time Temporary Clinical Instructors/Lab Assistants; and Reba Selph, Senior Secretary, to its faculty and staff.

   Dr. Albert Kress, Full-Time Temporary Assistant Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. Barnabe “Barry” Miburo, Associate Professor of Chemistry, have joined the Division of Science and Mathematics. Ran Fredell, Instructor of Mathematics, joined the ABAC faculty in January 2003.

The Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources welcomed Larry (Todd) Hicks, Temporary Full-Time Instructor of Ag Engineering.

    Richard Pye, Temporary Full-Time Instructor of Information Technology, has joined ABAC=s Division of Business Administration.

   The Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation welcomed Todd Sheppard, Assistant Professor and Men’s Basketball Coach.

   James Galt-Brown, Assistant Professor of History; Mouyyed Hassouna, Assistant Professor of Political Science; and Andrew Wright, Full-Time Temporary Instructor of History; have joined the Division of Social Science.

   The CAMP/HEP Program (College Assistance Migrant Program/High School Equivalency Program) welcomed Javier Gonzalez, Director of CAMP/HEP; Marisol Medina, Part-Time Secretary of CAMP/HEP; and Jokabeth Villalobos, Full-Time HEP Spanish Instructor.

   Judy McFarland joined GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) as Program Specialist.

   Student and Enrollment Services welcomed Lois Harper, Senior Secretary of Student Life and Housing, and Njeri Pringle, Director of Mitchell Hall.

   Debbie Cagle, Senior Secretary at ABAC on the Square in Moultrie, and Melanie Johnson, Part-Time Teaching Assistant at ABAC on the Square, have joined ABAC’s Evening and Off-Campus Program.

   Johnny Sumner has joined Fiscal and Physical Affairs as a Public Safety Officer.  OITS (Office of Information Technology and Services) welcomed Billy (BJ) Rathburn, Computer Services Specialist I.  

   Position changes at ABAC effective for the fall semester include the following:

   Dr. Susan Roe, former Temporary Full-Time Instructor of Music, is now Assistant Professor of Voice.

   Sandra Giles has returned from educational leave and will resume her duties as Assistant Professor of English in the Division of Humanities.

   This prized publication will now appear on a weekly basis.  The electronic version will begin in the near future, but for the time being, the FOCUS will be posted on the website each week and also a paper copy will appear in your boxes on Monday mornings. Note of Sympathy

   The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Traci Bryan, whose grandmother, Joanne Fleming Pendley, passed away on Aug. 12.  Sympathy is also extended to ABAC retiree Dr. Homer Day whose sister, Alberta Davis, passed away on Aug. 3.  Sympathy is also expressed to the family of former ABAC faculty member Barbara Morgan, who passed away on Aug. 8.  Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers. 

 

Care & Concern

   Ray Wells continues to be hospitalized in serious condition at Phoebe Putney.   Tammy Groover is recuperating after undergoing surgery at Tift Regional on Aug. 11.  Pattie Clark’s husband, Shawn, was transferred from Tift Regional to the intensive care unit of a Tallahassee, Fla., hospital on Aug. 13.  Please keep all these members of the ABAC Family in your thoughts and prayers.

 

Notes of Thanks

   Thank you to everyone for your concern and prayers for my successful surgery and recuperation.  Everything went well, and I got a good report.  The ABAC flowers are beautiful, and the cards lift my spirits and make me again thankful to work in such a caring community.

   Mike Vollmer and Mike Chason were the guest speakers at the Sylvester Kiwanis Club on Aug. 6 and at the Tifton Kiwanis Club on Aug. 8.

   Tom Call and Melvin Merrill were the guest speakers at the Tifton Rotary Club on Aug. 13.

   Tammy Groover attended the 2003 HIV Prevention Conference at the Atlanta Hyatt on July 27-31.  In addition to attending conference events, she also served as a volunteer to assist with conference registration and plenary sessions.
