Vollmer Begins Third Year

Congratulations to President Mike Vollmer who began his third year at ABAC on July 1.  Highlighted among the accomplishments during his two years include the groundbreaking on the $32 million residence hall project, the largest project of its kind at a two-year college in the United States.  Also, the college has opened the $1.5 million Pedestrian Mall, and construction will be completed this fall on the $7.1 million Ag Sciences Building.  ABAC is still on the list to receive $10 million in funding to renovate Tift, Herring, and Lewis halls.  An architect will soon be busy designing the new Nursing and Health Sciences Building.

Very active in the community, President Vollmer is the chair-elect of the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce.  He will take over as chair in January.

Construction Underway

Construction is now underway for the $32 million residence hall project next to Chandler Hall.  A total of 200 of the 835 beds are scheduled to be ready by Dec. 15, along with the 8,500-square-foot clubhouse.  Residents of Chandler will live in their existing hall during the fall term and in the new hall during the spring term.

Applications on the Rise

Admissions Director Angie Palmer reports that 1,190 applications for admission have been received for the fall term, as compared to 1,085 last year.  A total of 904 of those students have been accepted, in comparison to 646 at this time last year.   Financial Aid Director Jenelle Handcox reports that 2,686 students have applied for financial aid, as compared to 2,480 at this point last year.  Registrar Beth Saxon said 2,211 students have already registered for the fall term, as compared to 2,012 in 2002.

Next Orientation July 17

The second of three orientations for incoming freshmen prior to the fall term will be held July 17.  The final freshman orientation will be held Aug. 14-15, just prior to fall term classes beginning on Aug. 18.

Office Changes

The GEAR UP, Human Resources, and Institutional Research offices have moved.  The GEAR UP Office is now in Weltner Hall.  Human Resources has moved to Room 23 on the second floor of Tift Hall, and Institutional Research has moved to Tift Hall Room 22.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Dr. Amy Willis who successfully defended her dissertation at Valdosta State University last Wednesday.

Strickland on Vacation

Publications Specialist Helen Strickland will not be in her usual spot on Tuesday.  She will be on vacation.  She will return on July 15 to handle all your publication needs.

Csinos Leaves Admissions

Admissions Counselor Ali Csinos has left her position as an admissions counselor.  She will be teaching at Berrien High School in the fall.  Applications are now being accepted for her replacement.  Csinos joined the ABAC staff in December, 2002.

Ambassadors a Tucker Family Tradition

Laura Beth Tucker and her son, Brett, have established a unique tradition in their family: The Ocilla residents are the first parent and child in the history of Abraham Baldwin College to both serve as ABAC Ambassadors.

Laura Beth, who was a member of the first group of Ambassadors in 1987, attended ABAC from 1986-88. Brett has served as an ABAC Ambassador for the past two years and is currently president of the organization.

The ABAC Ambassadors are a select group of students chosen for their enthusiasm, leadership ability, and communication skills. They represent the college in Tifton and across the state of Georgia. Ambassadors assist the offices of public relations and admissions, representing and promoting the college at a variety of community and college events, including the Sunbelt Expo in Moultrie, the President’s Club Dinner, the annual Scholarship Benefit Banquet and Show, and Open Campus Day.

Laura Beth said being an ABAC Ambassador definitely influenced her career path and the choices she has made.

“The public relations and communication skills I developed as an Ambassador carried over into my career,” she said. “Conducting tours, giving speeches, and working at major events, such as the Expo and the President’s Club Dinner, strengthened my people skills. I had the opportunity to meet new people and gain networking experience, which helped me establish contacts. Serving as an ABAC Ambassador and developing all of these valuable skills helped me advance my career.”

Brett, a sophomore agri-business major, said his mother definitely influenced his decision to become an ABAC Ambassador.

“For me, there was never any question about becoming an ABAC Ambassador,” Brett said. “I knew that was what I wanted to do. I had some public relations experience from high school, but I wanted to obtain more skills. My mother’s experiences definitely had an impact on me. I saw all that she had accomplished, and she spoke very highly of the ABAC Ambassadors.”

Applications for the 2003-2004 Ambassadors’ program are now available in the Public Relations Office in Tift Hall.
