Operators Standing By

   Phones are now operational for GEAR UP in Weltner Hall and the Human Resources and Institutional Research offices on the second floor of Tift Hall. GEAR UP is located in the former home of Human Resources and the number is 391-6806.  Human Resources is located in Tift Hall, Room 23 where Institutional Research was former located.  That number is 386-3491.  Institutional Research is now located in Tift Hall, Room 22 in the former location of GEAR UP.  That phone number is 386-7231.

 

SEEC Youth Tour Here

   President Mike Vollmer, Angie Palmer, Melvin Merrill, and Mike Chason will host 30 of the state’s top high school leaders on Tuesday in the Magnolia Room when the SEEC Youth Tour makes its annual stop at ABAC.  Presidents of various statewide high school organizations will be on campus for a meal co-sponsored by the ABAC Foundation and the Georgia Peanut Commission as a part of their week-long sojourn though the state.

FOCUS Going to New Format

    Beginning in the very near future, this prized publication will be going to an email format.  For those of you not on the ABAC campus, please send your email address to pleonard@abac.edu by Aug. 6.  You will be included on the mailing list for the new and improved FOCUS.

 

Upward Bound Places First

   The ABAC Upward Bound students were named the overall winner of the South Georgia Upward Bound Olympics held on July 12 at Andrew College.  Other programs competing were Georgia Southwestern, Fort Valley State, and Morehouse College.  The competition included Math Challenge, Quiz Bowl, Chess, Scrabble, Public Speaking, Literary, Spelling Bee, Volleyball, Basketball, and One-Act Play. Many of the students will be traveling to New York this week.  They are scheduled to appear outside the window on the Today Show Tuesday morning.  Tune in and see if they get on camera.

    The Upward Bound Quiz Bowl Team also recently placed second in the Southeastern Regional Competition in Atlanta.

 

Harper New Secretary

   Residence Life Director Bernice Hughes has announced that Lois Harper is the new senior secretary for Student Life and Housing.  Her email address is lharper@abac.edu.

 

Move-In Day August 16

   All faculty, staff, students, and administrators are invited to assist with the annual Mandala Move-In Day on Aug. 16 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the ABAC Residence Halls.  If you can assist, email your name and T-shirt size to Director of Residence Life Bernice Hughes at bhughes@abac.edu.  Spouses and children above 12 are invited to assist.

 

ABAC Donates $1,000

   Alan Kramer and Bernice Hughes want to thank all those who assisted in the American Red Cross effort when ABAC donated over $1,000 to the American Red Cross Hero Campaign. 

 

Next FOCUS August 4

    The next edition of this prized publication will appear in your boxes on Aug. 4.  Please have all information for the FOCUS to the Public Relations Office by noon on July 31.

 

Ambassadors Needed

   If you know of a student who would be a great applicant for the ABAC Ambassadors program, please have them stop by the Public Relations Office on the second floor of Tift Hall. Applications are now available for the 2003-04 term.  The deadline for applications is noon on Aug. 26.

 

 

Target on Campus

   Target DC of Tifton will be on campus on Wednesday to recruit ABAC students as well as members of the community.  They are currently filling positions for parttime, fulltime, evenings, weekends, and seasonal work.  They will be taking applications, screening, and interviewing candidates from 3-7 p.m. in the Student Center Courtroom.

 

Moultrie Orientation August 7

   An orientation session for ABAC students attending classes in Moultrie will be held Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. at ABAC on the Square in Moultrie. Representatives from the Registrar’s, Admissions, and Financial Aid offices will be available to assist students.

   Anyone who is planning on attending classes this fall should definitely attend the session. Students can register for classes on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. at ABAC on the Square. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 18.

   More than 40 classes are available in Moultrie during the fall semester, including offerings in biology, business administration, computer information systems, communication, criminal justice, economics, education, English, history, mathematics, music, physical education, health and recreation, political science, psychology, sociology, and Spanish, as well as learning support and freshman seminar classes.

Care & Concern

   Cindy Jones’ mother, Marguerite Coats is in critical condition after undergoing gallbladder surgery and open heart surgery.  Olga Contreras’ mother is hospitalized with a strain of TB.  Please keep both these families in your thoughts and prayers.

ABAC Class in Sylvester

   One college class will be available in Sylvester during the fall semester from Abraham Baldwin. ABAC Evening and Off-Campus Program Director Gail Dillard said students can sign up for the class during ABAC freshman orientation sessions on Aug. 14 - 15. Classes begin Aug. 18.

   Composition I (ENGL 1101) will be offered in Sylvester during the fall semester on Tuesdays from 6:30 - 9:20 p.m.

   Three college classes will be available in Nashville during the fall semester from Abraham Baldwin. ABAC Evening and Off-Campus Program Director Gail Dillard said students can sign up for the classes during ABAC freshman orientation sessions on Aug. 14 -15. Classes begin Aug. 18.

   Classes in Nashville for the fall semester include Human Communication (COMM 1100) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 - 6:15 p.m., Composition I (ENGL 1101) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:20 - 9:35 a.m., and United States History II (HIST 2112) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:20 - 9:35 a.m.

Note of Sympathy

   The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Margaret Brogdon whose brother, Raymond Bailey, passed away on July 4.  Sympathy is also extended to Jean Hightower whose father passed away on July 14.  Condolences also go to the family of ARAMARK Custodial Crew member Joe Martin who was killed in a car accident on July 15.  Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

 

Notes of Thanks

ABAC Family

   Dr. Donna Miller won the Reach to Recovery Award from the American Cancer Society for outstanding service by a Reach to Recovery volunteer.

   Dr. Rod Brown and Lee Hodges accompanied forest technology students on several field trips this summer term.  On June 10, the group toured Weyerhaeuser’s pulp mill at Oglethorpe as well as timber harvesting and management operations in Sumter County.  The Griffin Lumber Company sawmill was visited on June 18.  The group attended the Forest Products Machinery and Equipment Exposition at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta on June 26.  Then on July 2, the group toured Langboard’s Medium Density Fiberboard plant near Willacoochee, followed by a visit to a timer harvesting operation near Pearson.

   Cheryl Biggs and Rita Wade attended the Learning a Living workshop for personnel who work with learning disability students on July 11 in Atlanta.
