Concert on Thursday

   The ABAC Jazz Band of Don Coates and the ABAC Concert Band of Gene Wyles will be featured on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Tift County High School for the annual spring concert.  There is no charge to attend. 

 

Health Careers Forum Tuesday

   A Health Careers Forum will be held on Tuesday from 3-4 p.m. in Room 103 of Britt Hall.  Guest speakers will include a representative from the Medical College of Georgia, plus professionals and students in a variety of health-related careers.

 

Open Forum Thursday

   An open forum will be held on Thursday for Beth Saxon for the ABAC Registrar’s position.  The forum is scheduled from 3-4 p.m. in Room 109 of Conger Hall.  Saxon is presently serving as the Interim Registrar.

 

Honors Day Wednesday

   The annual Honors Day ceremony will take place Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. in Gressette Gym.  Classes will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m. and resume at 2 p.m.  The top student at ABAC will be presented the J.G. Woodroof Scholar Award and recognition will be extended to Distinguished, Superior, and Honor students.  Scholarships will be presented, as well as the Division and Discipline awards.

   The Honors Day ceremony will also include the announcement of the top faculty member, top staff member, top administrator, and top advisor at the college during the 2002-2003 academic year. 

 

ABAC Honors Alumni at Homecoming

   Former Abraham Baldwin students and supporters were honored for professional achievement, community service, and service to the college during the 2003 ABAC Alumni Association Homecoming Awards Banquet on Saturday.

   Award recipients included John Hunt (posthumously), Distinguished Alumnus; Dr. David C. Bridges, J. Lamar Branch Award; I. Scott Hart, Jr., Master Farmer; Stephen Rakestraw, Outstanding Young Alumnus; Tim L. Chason, Outstanding Business Leader Award; Dr. Mary Ann Robinson Potter, Outstanding Educator; and  Robert G. Anderson, M.D., Outstanding Health Care Professional Award. The Family Legacy Award was presented to the Dudley D. Hudson Family. Dr. Lew S. Akin, Benny Dees, and Bette Turner earned Honorary Alumnus Awards.

   Other Homecoming activities included the dedication of Phase I of the Pedestrian Mall and a Forum on Agriculture titled ABAC and UGA: Building a Partnership for the Future by Dr. David C. Bridges.

 

Retirement Reception April 17

   President Mike Vollmer will present a Campus Update in the Cordell Conference Room for all members of the faculty, staff, and administration at 3 p.m. on April 17.  Also at that event, the Service Awards will be presented to those employees who have reached milestones in their ABAC careers.

  All activities will then move to the Donaldson Dining Hall, where delicious snacks will be prepared as we honor four members of the faculty and staff who will be retiring this year.  Honorees include Hubert Wood, Dr. Jerry Davis, Emory Johnson, and Dennis Bush.

 

Open Campus Day April 12

   The annual Spring Open Campus Day will be held on April 12 from 10 a.m.-noon in the Cordell Conference Room of the Carlton Center.  Exhibits can be set up in Section A of the Cordell Conference Room from 1-5 p.m. on April 11.

 

Benefit Tickets Available

    Tickets are now available for the ABAC Foundation’s scholarship benefit banquet and show on May 9 featuring Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.  Call 3265 to secure your $125 tickets to the event.  A portion of the cost is tax deductible.

 

Baseball Today

   The Golden Stallions will host Briarcliff for a 6 p.m. baseball doubleheader at Stallion Field today.  The Stallions will also be in action on Friday and Saturday against Truett McConnell.  Gametime is 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Friday’s game will be broadcast on Kool 97.7 with Emory Johnson at the microphone.

 

Fillies Play Tuesday

   The Golden Fillies of ABAC will take on Darton in a fastpitch softball twin-bill beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Fillie Field.

   The men’s and women’s tennis teams will host Georgia Southwestern at 2:30 p.m. today at the ABAC Tennis Center.  The Stallions will also be in action on Thursday at 2 p.m. against the Bobcats of Georgia College and State University. 

 

George Scott Day April 15

   The George Scott Day celebration at Abraham Baldwin will take place on April 15 from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. on the front lawn of the ABAC campus. The event is sponsored by the ABAC Humanities Division and the ABAC Music Department. Scott was a faculty member in the Humanities Division. The day was named in his honor when he passed away in 1994.

   One of the highlights of the day is a dinner and concert by Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall. Ferguson has long been recognized as one of the premier trumpeters and big band leaders from 1950 to the present.  He is most famous for Gonna’ Fly Now from the movie Rocky.

   For additional information or to purchase tickets to the Ferguson concert, contact the ABAC Arts Connection at 386-3558. General admission to the concert is $20 for adults and $15 for students. ABAC students are admitted free with student ID. Dinner tickets must be purchased by April 8. The additional cost for dinner is $15.

   George Scott Day events will be held from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and include readings from Pegasus, ABAC’s literary magazine, the presentation of Pegasus awards, and a student writers’ conference. Musical events include performances by the ABAC Concert Band, under the direction of Eugene Wyles, and the ABAC Concert Choir and the Jazz Choir, both under the direction of Wayne Jones. The ABAC Saxophone Quartet and Clarinet Choir, both under the direction of Wyles, and the ABAC Sabor Latino Dancers will perform from 4:30-6 p.m.

   The 24th annual ABAC Jazz Festival will take place along with George Scott Day. Meals will be served to the public from 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m. and from 4:30–6 p.m. The cost is $5 per meal. 

 

Conner to be Honored

   ABAC Women’s Basketball Coach Julie Conner will be honored on April 11 as the Georgia Junior College Women’s Coach of the Year at the 35th annual Naismith Awards Banquet at the Georgia World Congress Center.  The Naismith Awards are sponsored by the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.   Conner’s team rolled up a 21-7 record this year, the most victories in the history of women’s basketball at ABAC. 

 

Badminton Tournament Today

      If you like to play badminton, there will be a badminton tournament at 5 p.m. today in Gressette Gym.

 

Run With the Stallions

   All faculty, staff, administrators, and students are invited to join in the Run With the Stallions and Fillies 10K and 5K runs this Saturday.  T-shirts and medallions will be presented.  The entry fee for faculty and staff is $10.  The general public charge is $15.  Registration is from 7-8 a.m. at Gressette Gym. 

 

Golf Tourney April 14

   The annual ABAC Recreational Sports Spring Swing golf tournament will be held at ABAC’s Forest Lakes Golf Club beginning at 3 p.m. on April 14.  The SGA will provide food afterwards.  Sign up with Herb Hendrix.

Basketball Banquet April 24

   Tickets are $15 per person to the annual Basketball Awards Banquet on April 24 in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  The guest speaker will be Valdosta State University Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Yarbrough.  Call Coach Julie Conner at 3927 or Coach Robert Moore at 3932 to purchase your tickets.

 

RHA Benefit Yard Sale April 26

   The third annual Residence Hall Association Benefit Yard Sale will be held on April 26 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.  Rent your tables from the RHA, and you keep the proceeds from your items sold.  Individuals, clubs, churches, and civic groups are welcome.  For more information, call Bernice Hughes at 386-3233 or email her at bhughes@abac.edu. 

 

Congratulations!

   Anthony Fitzgerald re-married his first wife, Lucie (Bruhn), on March 18 at a private ceremony in Tallahassee.  She is a native of Berlin, Germany, and will be moving to Tifton.  Best wishes!

 

Care and Concern

   Tim Dorminey’s wife, Darlene, has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Tift Regional Medical Center for complications from acid reflux disease.   Brenda Bailey’s husband, John, is recuperating at home following shoulder surgery.  Amy Willis’ mother, Nadine Pearman, is recuperating after suffering a stroke.  Please keep all these members of the ABAC Family in your thoughts and prayers.

 

ABAC Family

   Annie Sims led a workshop focusing on career development for ABAC Moultrie students on March 31. 

   Dr. Jonathan Harrington presented a workshop on job interviewing skills to ABAC students in Moultrie on April 3.

   Cheryl Biggs and Rita Wade accompanied several students to Tallahassee on March 29 to see the musical Dreamgirls.  This trip was just one of the many activities Student Support Services offers to its program participants for cultural enrichment.
