Saxon Named Registrar

   Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services Tom Call has announced that Beth Saxon has accepted the position of Registrar at ABAC.  Saxon had served as Interim Registrar since November, 2001.  Prior to that time Saxon had been Director of the Learning Support Program, Interim Chair of the Division of Developmental Studies, and a member of the mathematics faculty.  Saxon joined the faculty in 1993.  The Registrar’s Office is located on the second floor of the J. Lamar Branch Student Center.

 

Scholarship Benefit Tickets Available

   Over half the tickets have been sold for ABAC’s annual scholarship benefit banquet and show on May 9 featuring Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.  Last year’s event sold out, and Melvin Merrill and Betty McCorvey are hoping for the same response this year.  Tickets are $125 each.  A portion of the cost is tax deductible.  Call 3265 to secure your tickets. 

   The Gatlins have 17 top ten hits including All the Gold in California, Broken Lady, Houston, She Used to be Somebody’s Baby, and Love is Just a Game.  Over the past 31 years, the annual scholarship event has generated over $1 million in scholarships for ABAC students.

 

ABAC to TCHS on May 8

   ABAC faculty members, staff members, and administrators will meet with all juniors and seniors at Tift County High School on May 8.  Admissions Director Angie Palmer is coordinating the effort.  If you are willing to volunteer, contact apalmer@abac.edu.  The group will leave campus at approximately 8:30 a.m. and will return by 10:15 a.m.  The classroom session is scheduled from 9-9:45 a.m.  The purpose of the visit is to update students on opportunities available beyond high school.

 

Basketball Dinner on Thursday

   The men’s and women’s basketball teams at ABAC will host their annual awards dinner on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  Tickets are $15 per person.  You can buy them from Coach Julie Conner at 3927 or Coach Robert Moore at 3932.  The guest speaker for the event will be Valdosta State University Blazers’ Basketball Coach Jim Yarbrough.

 

Choir Spring Concert Tuesday

   The ABAC Concert Choir will present its spring concert on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church.  There is no charge to attend.  ABAC Choral Director Wayne Jones said the concert will also feature organist Gina Lawhon, members of the Albany Symphony, the Georgia Southwestern Concert Choir, the Darton Concert Choir, and the Albany Chorale.

 

Ms. MASDA Tonight

   The Ms. MASDA Pageant will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  Admission is $3. Make your plans to attend.

 

Baseball on Friday

   The Golden Stallions of Coach Steve Janousek will host Gordon for a 4 p.m. game on Friday and for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Stallion Field.  Games are scheduled to be broadcast on WKAA—Kool 97.7 with Emory Johnson at the play-by-play microphone.  At presstime, the Stallions were hoping to gain a spot in the GJCAA tournament in Douglas beginning May 8.

 

Catch Softball on Tuesday

   The Golden Fillies of Coach Donna Campbell will host archrival Middle Georgia in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Fillies Field on Tuesday.  The Fillies are preparing for the state tournament which will be held at Atlanta Metro beginning Friday.  The Fillies are hoping for a spot in the national tournament to be held in Clearwater, Fla., on May 15.

 

Stallions Play for Title on Saturday

   The Golden Stallions of Coach Alan Kramer will play for the Region XVII state tennis title on Saturday.  Final round matches should begin at approximately 3 p.m. at the ABAC Tennis Center.  The Stallions are hoping for a spot in the national tournament to be held in Dallas, Texas, on May 13.

 

Wall of Honor in Dining Hall

   The Office of Student and Enrollment Services has posted a patriotic bulletin board in the Donaldson Dining Hall called “The Wall of Honor.”  It has been provided for students, faculty, and staff members to post pictures of their loved ones who are serving the USA as a part of the Armed Services.  Feel free to post pictures or names on the wall to support our military service personnel with our thoughts and prayers in the days to come.

 

RHA Benefit Yard Sale Saturday

   The third annual Residence Hall Association Benefit Yard Sale will be held on Saturday from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.  Rent your tables from the RHA, and you keep the proceeds from your items sold.  Individuals, clubs, churches, and civic groups are welcome.  For more information, call Bernice Hughes at 386-3233 or email her at bhughes@abac.edu.

   The Baldwin Library will host its fourth annual Poetry Reading on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Pedestrian Mall Plaza.  Read or recite your favorite poetry, rap, or lyrics.  Contact Dina Willis for details at dwillis@abac.edu.

 

Graduation on May 8

   The spring graduation ceremony will be held on May 8 at 6 p.m. in Gressette Gym.  The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Jeanine Dorminey, this year’s J.G. Woodroof Scholar at ABAC.  Dorminey is a member of the Fillies’ basketball team and has a 4.0 GPA.  Approximately 124 graduates are expected to participate in the ceremony.

 

Thanks for Your Help

   Admissions Director Angie Palmer reports that 80 students and 79 parents attended the annual Spring Open Campus Day in the Carlton Center on April 12.  From Public Safety to professors in every division at ABAC, thank you for your support at this event.

 

Congratulations!

   Melvin Merrill is the proud grandfather of a new granddaughter born on April 14. Savannah Rae weighed a little over seven pounds.  Her parents are Mark and Shelley Easton Merrill.  Mark is currently serving with the USMC in Kuwait.

   Margie Senkbeil is the proud grandmother of Michael Beau Senkbeil who was born on April 11.  Beau weighed seven pounds, nine ounces, and was 21 inches long.  Congratulations to all!

 

Relay for Life Friday

   The annual Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held at the walking track near the ABAC Tennis Center on Friday evening.

   Faculty, staff, and administrators were honored at last week’s Faculty/Staff Meeting for their years of service to ABAC.  Retirees honored were Hubert Wood, Dr. Jerry Davis, and Dennis Bush.  Honored with plaques for 30 years of service were Wasdon Graydon, Emory Johnson, and Barbara Wood.   Presented plaques for 25 years of service were Melvin Merrill, Janice Payne, and Dr. Eddie Seagle

   Recognized for 20 years of service were Arlene Bailey, Bobbie Baldree, Charles Griffin, Lyn Smith, and Duane Weeks.

   Fifteen-year honorees were Paul Miller, Barbara Snyder, Ray Wells, and Floyd Wright.

   Honored for 10 years of service were Terry Clark, Michael Curry, Jerry Edwards, Jimmy Felton, Alton Hudgins, David Keller, Alan Kramer, Dr. Donna Miller, Alice Ray, Beth Saxon, and Vickie Walker.

ABAC Family

   Dr. Maggie Martin, Dr. Jonathan Harrington, and Phyllis Kester administered the National ACT to 32 students from over 14 different school districts on April 12.

   Annie Simms led a workshop titled “Attacking Anxiety Disorders” for Moultrie students on April 15.

   Robin Poor spoke with ag ed students in Carroll, Chattooga, Floyd, Fulton, and Walker counties during March.  She also spoke with FFA chapters in Chattooga and Walker counties, as well as allied health students in Floyd County and law enforcement students in Carroll County.  She attended College Fairs at Kennesaw Mountain High School, the Chattooga County Civic Center, and Maxwell High School.  She also judged events for FFA and FCCLA regional competitions and spoke with seniors at Temple High School.
