Julie Hunt Appointed

   Julie Hunt, widow of Regent John Hunt, will represent the Second Congressional District on the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia to fill her husband’s unexpired term through Jan. 1, 2004.  Governor Sonny Perdue made the appointment.  Hunt is an Ashburn native who is an ABAC alumna.  She has two children and seven grandchildren.

 

Call Receives Impact Award

   Vice President for Student Enrollment Services Tom Call received the Impact Award voted on by the ABAC SGA at last week’s Student Leadership Banquet.  Also honored by the student newspaper were the Pacesetters.  They included Alan Kramer, Marsha Anderson, Amy Willis, Shirley Wilson, Cathy Rogers, Dr. John Dunn, Emory Johnson, Sean McRae, Dr. Erin Campbell, and Tom Call.  Students honored with Pacesetters were Judy Shiflet, Amanda Richards, and Candice Clark.  A Superior Pacesetter Award was presented to Bernice Hughes.

   The Cattlemen’s Association was named Club of the Year.  Brett Tucker was selected as Mr. Baldwin and Pippa Mpunzwana was selected as Ms. Baldwin out of the Who’s Who nominees.  Sam Freeman was elected as the new president of the SGA.

 

Faculty/Staff Meeting Thursday

   President Mike Vollmer has called a faculty/staff meeting for Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Cordell Conference Room.  At that time he will give an update on the state of the college.  Also during this time the service awards will be presented to those employees who have reached milestones in their ABAC careers. 

  All activities will then move to the Donaldson Dining Hall, where delicious snacks will be prepared as we honor four members of the faculty and staff who will be retiring this year.  Honorees include Hubert Wood, Dr. Jerry Davis, Emory Johnson, and Dennis Bush.  Wood retired in March after 28 years of service, Davis will retire in June with 16 years of service, Johnson will retire in September with 30 years of service, and Bush will retire in August with 31 years of service.

 

George Scott Day Tuesday

   Enjoy all the events of George Scott Day and the 24th annual ABAC Jazz Festival on the front lawn of the ABAC campus on Tuesday.  You can also eat lunch and dinner on the lawn at a cost of $5 per person.  Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m., and dinner will be served from 4:30-7 p.m.  High school jazz bands, as well as the ABAC Jazz Band, will perform on the Jazz Festival Stage from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. 

   Other activities include the ABAC Art Show from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Creswell Lobby, ABAC Pegasus readings, the ABAC Student Writers Conference, and performances by the ABAC Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Choir, vocal soloists, clarinet choir, saxophone quartet, and the Sabor Latino dancers.  Those activities run on the George Scott Stage from 10:45 a.m.-6 p.m. 

   One of the highlights of the day is a dinner and concert by Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall. Admission is $20 for adults.  ABAC students will be admitted free.  There is an additional cost for dinner of $15.  Dinner reservations must be made ahead of time at 3558. 

 

Top Awards Presented

   Cathy Rogers, a faculty member in the Division of Humanities, received the Donaldson Award for Teaching Excellence at last week’s Honors Day ceremony.  Also receiving awards were Bernice Hughes, Director of Residence Life, for the Carson Leadership Award; Fran Kinchen, Secretary to the President, for the Jackson Staff Excellence Award; and Pattie Clark, a faculty member in the Division of Nursing, for the Excellence in Advising Award.  ABAC student Jeanine Dorminy was presented the J.G. Woodroof Scholar Award, and over $45,000 in scholarships were awarded to deserving students.

 

Quiz Bowl Finishes Fourth

   The ABAC Quiz Bowl Team finished fourth in the Community College Division at the national tournament in Los Angeles.  Congratulations to Coach Erin Campbell, Assistant Coach Jeff Newberry, and their fine group of scholars.

 

Hughes Named Coach of the Year

   Congratulations to Sheila Hughes, who was named the Coach of the Year at the Southeastern Regional Forensics Tournament held at ABAC on April 4-6.  ABAC did not field a team at this year’s tournament, but because of the respect and admiration the other coaches had for Hughes’ ability, she was selected for the honor.  Hughes is an assistant professor of communication in the Division of Humanities.  She will be moving to California later this year.  This is her final semester at ABAC.

    Tickets are now available for the ABAC Foundation’s scholarship benefit banquet and show on May 9 featuring Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.  Call 3265 to secure your $125 tickets to the event.  A portion of the cost is tax deductible.

   The Student Georgia Association of Educators chapter at ABAC won first place in the Chapter Display competition at the recent state conference while competing against four-year colleges and universities.  ABAC student Willie Allen will serve as SGAE state secretary, and ABAC student Ben Kennedy will serve on the SGAE Executive Committee.  Allen and Kennedy will represent the state of Georgia along with ABAC student Amanda Mays at the national NEA Convention in New Orleans in July.  Sue Wilson is the advisor for the chapter.

 

Softball Fillies at Home

   The Golden Fillies’ softball team will host Darton College for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday and Coastal Community College for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.  Catch all the action at Fillies’ Field.

 

State Tennis Tourney Saturday

   Coach Alton Hudgins’ Golden Fillies will host the state two-year college tennis tournament on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the ABAC Tennis Center.  Come out and support the team.  The Fillies have won nine consecutive state titles.

 

Baseball on Thursday

   The Golden Stallions’ baseball team will host Briarcliff for a 6 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday at Stallion Field. 

 

RHA Benefit Yard Sale April 26

   The third annual Residence Hall Association Benefit Yard Sale will be held on April 26 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m.  Rent your tables from the RHA, and you keep the proceeds from your items sold.  Individuals, clubs, churches, and civic groups are welcome.  For more information, call Bernice Hughes at 386-3233 or email her at bhughes@abac.edu.

Hoops Affair April 24

   Tickets are $15 per person to the annual Basketball Awards Banquet on April 24 in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  The guest speaker will be Valdosta State University Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Yarbrough.  Call Coach Julie Conner at 3927 or Coach Robert Moore at 3932 to purchase your tickets.

 

Motor Pool Update

   Vice President for Fiscal Affairs Floyd Wright has announced that the ABAC bus has been deleted from the transportation fleet.  The cars in the motor pool have also been deleted from transportation use.  Only vans will now be available for rental from the motor pool.  In order to use a van, there must be at least three people riding in the vehicle.  Effective July 1, the back seat will be removed from the 15-passenger vans, which means the maximum number of passengers will be 11 in the vehicle.  This has been recommended by State of Georgia safety officials. 

 

ABAC Family

   Sharon Ellis taught a class on PeopleSoft Accounts Receivable Query to other functional users from the University System of Georgia on April 8 in Macon.  Judy Perry assisted as navigator.

   Dr. Earl Bennett, Mike Curry, Gary Dicks, Jerry Edwards, Stephanie Holcombe, Lori Pearman, Melanie Robertson, Joy Shurley, and Margaret Treadway attended the University System of Georgia Learning Support Conference on April 6-8 at Callaway Gardens.  Holcombe and Robertson made presentations.

   The ABAC Family and Consumer Sciences Club hosted the State Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences meeting on April 4-5.  Students and advisors from FVSU, GSU, and UGA were in attendance.  ABAC students elected to state offices were Mary Beth DeMott, State Student Chair; Laura Bland, First Vice Chair; Lottie McGowan, Second Vice Chair; and Katie Stripling, Secretary.  Club Advisor Darby Sewell and seven club members also visited UGA on April 6-7, where they met with their future advisors in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and took a campus tour.

   Mike Chason was the master of ceremonies for the Tift County Special Olympics on April 4.

   During the month of February, Robin Poor spoke with ag ed students in Gilmer County and made presentations to FFA and VICA students in Carroll County.  She participated in Junior Interview Day at Villa Rica High School and attended College Fairs at Sprayberry and MLK, Jr. high schools.  She also visited Career Centers at Carrollton and Mount Zion high schools and attended GED Examiners Training at Middle Georgia Technical College.
