Legacy of John Hunt

The entire ABAC Family wishes to express its sympathy to the family of John Hunt.  The ABAC alumnus and member of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia passed away on March 19.  Services were held at the First United Methodist Church on March 21.

“We have lost a true friend of ABAC,” President Mike Vollmer said.  “He meant so much to this institution and so much to the University System.”

At presstime, no replacement had been named for Hunt on the Board of Regents.

Forensics Tournament Friday

The Phi Rho Pi Regional Forensics Tournament will be held on campus Friday through Sunday.  The most talented speakers from two-year colleges throughout the southeast will be competing in individual events, group interpretation, and debate.  Rounds will be held in several buildings throughout campus, and everyone is invited to attend.  Contact Sheila Hughes at 7219 if you have questions.

Homecoming 2003 This Weekend

Alumni from across Georgia and the surrounding states will return to the campus of ABAC on Friday and Saturday for Homecoming 2003. The theme for this year’s event is “ABAC: Building for the Future.” The event will focus on new buildings, the new Pedestrian Mall, and new programs planned for the future.

A special candlelight memorial service will pay tribute to deceased alumni on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths. Individuals will be given the opportunity to light a candle in memory of anyone associated with ABAC—a former classmate, family member, faculty or staff member, or friend. An added feature this year will be the opportunity to light a candle in honor of the men and women serving in the Armed Forces.

The Homecoming Dinner and Dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the Donaldson Dining Hall. The dance, which begins at 8:30 p.m., will feature the music of the Jim Newton Band. The dinner and dance are open to alumni and anyone who would like to attend at a cost of $20 per person. With the theme, “An Evening in Savannah,” the dinner is sure to be a culinary delight.

Pre-registration is strongly recommended for ABAC’s Homecoming 2003 events. To register, purchase tickets, or receive a complete schedule of activities, contact  the Alumni Office at 386-3321, or send an e-mail to alumni@abac.edu.

Pedestrian Mall Dedication Saturday

The dedication ceremony for the first phase of the Pedestrian Mall at ABAC will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday as a part of the 2003 Homecoming activities.

The Pedestrian Mall is a 15-feet wide brick walkway through the center of campus that will eventually be lined with every tree, shrub, and flower native to the state of Georgia. Phase I of the project extends from the front of the Donaldson Dining Hall to the Environmental Horticulture Building.

Director of Alumni Relations Nancy Coleman said families and individuals have purchased bricks, benches, lamp posts, and family seating areas on the Mall. She said these people will be recognized as the ceremony moves from in front of the Dining Hall to the grand opening of the fountain at the Central Plaza, located next to the Carlton Center.

First Tuesday This Week

The April event in the First Tuesday Concert Series will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.  The ABAC Brass Quintet, the ABAC Clarinet Choir, the ABAC Saxophone Quartet, and various other local musicians will be featured.

Tickets for the performance may be purchased at the door. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for students. ABAC students are admitted free with ID. Patrons of the Arts and Entertainment Series can also attend at no charge. For additional information, contact the Arts Connection at 386-3558.

Reflection Time Begins

With the war continuing in Iraq, ABAC students have requested a time of reflection, meditation, and prayer.  That time will be made available in the Chapel of All Faiths Monday-Friday from 9-10 a.m.  It is open to anyone who would like to attend.
