Upward Bound Wins Competition

   Four students from the ABAC Upward Bound Academic Bowl Team finished in first place in the academic competition in Atlanta on Feb. 21-22 against teams from Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Savannah, Atlanta Metro, Andrew, and Thomas University.  The ABAC team will now return to Atlanta on April 12 to participate in the regional competition against teams from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. 

   Upward Bound students who competed were Jwaltney Daniels, Timmie Paulhill, Eddie Valentine, and Ellis Washington, III.  Assisting the team were Kenneth Newkirk, Jean Oliver-Burks, and Jewrell Rivers.  Good luck to the Upward Bound Academic Team at regionals!

 

Rogers Wins Circle K Award

   Cathy Rogers received the George Martin Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award at the 44th District Convention of Circle K in Atlanta on March 1.  Other award winners from the ABAC Circle K chapter  were Mandy Ward, Distinguished Secretary, and Jason Baker and Rosa Mincey, John C. Thompson Distinguished Members.  The ABAC group also won the Attendance Award and the Scrapbook Award.  Tifton Kiwanis Club Advisor Duncan McCluskey was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

 

Mr. ABAC to be Chosen Tuesday

   Thirty-seven men attending Abraham Baldwin will compete for the title of Mr. ABAC in the 13th annual competition on Tuesday.  The theme for this year’s event is “City Slickers.”  Sponsored, produced, and directed by the Family and Consumer Sciences Club, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  The cost is $2 for ABAC students with student ID and $3 for general admission. 

   Contestants will compete in casual attire, formal attire, and interview categories.  They will also be judged on a written essay.  The top contestant will receive a plaque and a cash prize.  A contestant’s award, voted on by the contestants, will also be given.  The FCSC members will choose Mr. Photogenic, Best Eyes, Best Smile, and other awards.

   Dotty Davis from B-100 will emcee the event.  Entertainment will be provided by the ABAC Gospel Choir and the Sabor Latino dancers.  FCSC President Katie Stripling will present the award to Mr. ABAC 2003.  Last year’s winner was Nathan Johnson.

 

Conner Wins Coach of the Year

   In her third year at the helm of the Golden Fillies’ basketball team, Coach Julie Conner has been named Coach of the Year in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association.  Conner‘s team rolled to a season record of 20-6, with a 10-4 league record.  The Fillies are the defending tournament champions in Region XVII of the NJCAA.  

   Also honored last week were ABAC players Britney Wetherington and Shanekia Felton who were named to the All-Region Team.   Felton averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists per game.  Wetherington averaged 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists per game.  Named to the honorable mention team was Jeanine Dorminey.

   At presstime the Fillies were playing Georgia Perimeter in the state semifinal round.

 

New Classes for Fall

   Interim Registrar Beth Saxon said Session A and Session B classes are scheduled for the fall term.  As you advise your students, please remember that Session A classes meet for the first half of the term, and Session B classes meet for the second half of the term. Classes not identified as Session A or B meet for the full term. For details, contact esaxon@abac.edu.

 

Stallion Sweeps SRPI Awards

   ABAC’s award-winning newspaper, The Stallion, has secured all first place wins in the two-year division categories of the 2002 Southern Regional Press Institute awards ceremony.  The newspaper won first place for Best Overall Newspaper, Features, Sports, Editorials, and Best Photography.  Also, second place wins were earned for Sports and Photography.  The luncheon was held in Savannah on Feb. 28.  It follows up a showing in the Georgia College Press Association awards category where the The Stallion won Best Two-Year College Newspaper in the State.  Eric Cash is the advisor.

 

Kramer Honored by USTA

   The United States Tennis Association has honored ABAC Athletics Director and Men’s Tennis Coach Alan Kramer as one of 28 tennis teachers from across the nation who have excelled in implementing the USTA’s local USA Tennis programs for people of all ages and abilities. 

   To be eligible for the national honor, nominees had to successfully implement USA tennis programs; generate interest in USA Tennis programs through local promotions; creatively and effectively use USTA section and/or national funding; find and secure additional sponsorship resources; increase community tennis association participation and/or development; and increase the number of participants in USA Tennis Pathway programs.

 

Who’s Who Deadline

   Now is the time to pick up applications for students for Who’s Who at ABAC and Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges.  Applications are available in the Housing Office in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center.  The application deadline is Friday.  Students should have at least a 3.0 GPA for Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges and at least a 2.5 GPA for Who’s Who at ABAC, as well as having completed 30 semester hours at the end of the Fall 2002 semester and be very active on campus.  Selections will be announced at the Student Leadership Banquet on April 9. 

 

Win Two Tickets

   Enter our on-line contest to rename ABAC’s annual scholarship benefit banquet and show (formerly known as Dollars for Scholars). The winner will receive two tickets to this year’s event to be held on May 9.  The contest entry form can be found at http://www.abac.edu/foundation/DFS/contest.htm. The deadline for entries is April 4.

 

Baseball on the Air

   The Golden Stallions of Coach Steve Janousek will play a baseball doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday against John Wood.  Emory Johnson will provide play-by-play commentary on WKKA—Kool 97.7 on Saturday.  Come out and see the Stallions.

 

Intramural Basketball Finishes Second

   The ABAC men’s intramural basketball team finished second among 13 colleges and universities in the annual statewide competition in Athens.  The ABAC team beat Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Armstrong Atlantic, Georgia Military, and Georgia Southern before losing to Columbus in the championship.  Herb Hendrix coordinated the intramural effort.

   If you know of anyone who is interested in enrolling in the new agriscience and environmental systems degree at ABAC from the University of Georgia, direct them to the new website at www.dogsgonesouth.org.  Each Tuesday and Thursday from 2-4 p.m., anyone interested in pursuing the four-year AES degree can visit UGA reps in the Evening and Off-Campus Programs Office in Tift Hall.  For more information, call Ben Kennedy at 386-3528.

 

Fillies Play Tennis Saturday

   Coach Alton Hudgins’ Fillies’ tennis team will take on FCCJ at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the ABAC Tennis Center.  Come out and support the Fillies.

 

Stallions Bow Out of Tourney

    Coach Robert Moore’s Golden Stallions lost a 79-70 decision to arch rival Middle Georgia Wednesday night in the first round of the NJCAA Region XVII Tourney at Gressette Gym.  The Stallions wound up their season with a 10-20 overall record.  

 

New Workforce Center

    ABAC President Mike Vollmer and Public Service and Business Outreach Director Diane Kilgore helped to break ground on Feb. 28 for the new Tifton Workforce Center in downtown Tifton. 

   The building will house computer labs, classrooms, resource rooms, and equipment for job seekers; a business service center for employers; and offices for career advisors and partnering agencies.  The new center is scheduled to open by September, 2003.   A $435,615 OneGeorgia Authority Grant was acquired to help fund the project. 

 

Business Expo at Gressette Gym

   The Tift County Chamber of Commerce is one of the sponsors for the Business Expo at Gressette Gym on March 18 from 4-8 p.m.  Various businesses in the community will place exhibits on the gym floor.

 

Pork Chop Dinner March 27

   The ABAC Ag Division is selling pork chop dinner plates at a cost of $6 each.  The plates can be picked up at the Yow Building on March 27 from 4-6 p.m.  Call 3255 to purchase your tickets.

 

Care & Concern

   Frank Landers is recuperating at Tift Regional Medical Center following surgery to remove his appendix on Wednesday.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
