New Spring Enrollment Record

Students at Abraham Baldwin shattered another enrollment record Thursday when President Mike Vollmer announced that the ABAC headcount has now reached 3,003 students for the spring semester.

“It’s an incredible achievement, and I think the credit has to go to a hard-working group of faculty and staff members at our college,” Vollmer said.  “We were astounded when the enrollment went over 3,000 for the fall term and now we have accomplished the unthinkable two semesters in a row.”

ABAC’s previous spring term enrollment high occurred last spring with a headcount of 2,656 students. During the 2002 fall semester, the enrollment reached an alltime high of 3,033 students.  Registrar Beth Saxon said that normally the enrollment during the spring semester averages seven percent fewer students than the fall.  That didn’t happen this spring.

“There are a lot of factors,” Saxon said.  “The enrollment at ABAC on the Square in Moultrie is over 350 students, and that is an alltime high.  We’re also up in our evening program numbers.”

Evening and Off Campus Programs Director Gail Dillard said 820 students are taking night classes on campus, another alltime record which is a 40 percent increase over last spring.   Dillard said the Moultrie figures represent a 49 percent increase.

Ag Career Forum Thursday

The Job Placement Office is sponsoring an agricultural career forum on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Section B of the Cordell Conference Room.  Interested students can find out about ag-related careers from professionals already in the field.  Information covering salary expectations, skills employers look for, and job outlook will be discussed.  Call Dr. Jonathan Harrington at 7111 for more information.

Jones Named Director

Wayne Jones has been selected as the director of the Abraham Baldwin Arts Connection.  Jones had been serving in an interim director’s capacity.  He will continue to lead the choral program at ABAC in addition to his Arts Connection duties.  Jones has been a faculty member at ABAC since 1989.

Career Day February 19

ABAC’s annual Career Day will be held on Feb. 19 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  Companies and employers will be present to give students information about their companies and to possibly interview students for jobs.

Coordinator of Job Placement Jonathan Harrington expects over 35 companies and businesses from all areas of Georgia and the Southeast. Call 7111 for more information.

Pedestrian Mall Update

Stephen Rakestraw reports that the Pedestrian Mall paving from the Dining Hall to the Horticulture Building will be complete at the end of February.  Landscaping of the area is scheduled to be completed in March.  All the paving to the new Ag Sciences Building should be completed by April 1.

In fact, Rakestraw reports that the landscaping of shrubs, trees, and grass will be installed from the Dining Hall to the Horticulture Building by Homecoming on April 5.  Hopefully, the fountain will be running, the benches will be full of alumni, and the Central Plaza will be packed with pedestrians.  The streetlights were turned on for the first time last week, and they looked absolutely fabulous.  This is a project the entire ABAC Family can be proud of for years to come.

Deadline for Hawaii March 7

The deadline for submitting an application and paying a deposit for ABAC’s Hawaii trip this summer is March 7.  The cost for the 10-day trip is approximately $2,795. Projected dates of the trip are June 5-14.  Contact Katrina Williams at 3267 or email her at kwilliam for more information.  It promises to be a fabulous trip.

OITS Has Moved

The Office of Information Technology and Services has moved to Room 107 in the Carlton Center, which is the former home of the Public Service and Business Outreach Office.  Personnel located there include Dr. Chrystle Ross, Patsy Hembree, Jim May, and Donnie Thompson.  Telephone numbers will remain the same.

The Family & Consumer Sciences Club will sponsor the 13th annual Mr. ABAC Contest on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  The theme is City Slickers.  Divisions, residence halls, athletic teams, and clubs are encouraged to sponsor contestants.    Dear ABAC Friends,

Mitch and I both appreciate all your expressions of love and concern while he was going through his bypass surgery and recovery.  The poinsettia was beautiful, and your cards and calls were welcome reminders that there were a lot of people in our corner.  We especially appreciate all your prayers.  They were answered!  Mitch continues to improve daily.

                                    Thank you so much,

                                    Mitch & Sandra Hunt

I would like to thank the ABAC Family for the cards, emails, phone calls and words of encouragement during the loss of my Grandpa.  I am very thankful that you were there for me.  You are what makes ABAC so special!

                                    May God bless,

                                    Ashley Purvis

ABAC Increases SCCP Giving

January marked the official end of the State Charitable Contributions Program (SCCP) campaign for 2003.  ABAC’s pledges and contributions totaled $6,571, a 20 percent increase over the previous year, and an amount which exceeded our goal.  That percentage of increase is remarkable considering that 58 percent of the rest of the System institutions were unable to increase their level of giving from the previous year.   The ABAC departments having 100 percent participation were treated by President Mike Vollmer to a pizza party Friday prepared by B.J. Smith and the ARAMARK staff.  The following offices were invited:  CAMP, HEP, College Services, Human Resources, Learning Support, Student and Enrollment Services, and Institutional Research and Planning.

ABAC Family

Polly Huff attended the annual Georgia Festivals and Events Association Convention held in Savannah on Feb. 1-4.  She was nominated to serve on the group’s board of directors beginning in 2004.

Alan Kramer accompanied Julie Conner to the GA-WIN (Women’s Intersport Network) Community Awards Program in Atlanta.  Conner was a finalist for the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Junior College Coach of the Year.  The theme for the banquet was “Succeed in Sports, Lead in Life.”

Mike Chason was the guest speaker at the Tifton Kiwanis Club on Jan. 31.  He presented a Powerpoint titled Kiwanis in Pictures.

Pattie Clark served on a SACS Reaffirmation Committee to Richmond Community College in Rockingham, N.C. on Feb. 2-5.  She also read to Ms. Lindsey’s class at Len Lastinger School on Feb. 7.
