Dollars for Scholars Sells Out Again

For the second consecutive year and the fifth time in its 31-year history, the Dollars for Scholars Benefit Banquet and Show at Abraham Baldwin is a complete sellout. ABAC Foundation President Melvin Merrill said all 600 seats for the 7:30 p.m. show on Friday featuring Lorrie Morgan are filled.

"I don't think there is any question that Lorrie Morgan had a lot to do with this sellout," Merrill, who has been in charge of the event since 1979, said. "Also I think a lot of people just appreciate the Dollars for Scholars tradition."

Merrill said other sellouts of the annual Foundation-sponsored evening were Roger Williams in 1980, Gloria Loring in 1985, Ray Stevens in 1986, and Ronnie Milsap in 2001. Tickets to the event are $125 each, and proceeds go to the student scholarship program at the college. Over $650,000 has been raised through the years for student scholarship funds.

Food Services Director B.J. Smith and her ARAMARK staff are planning a lavish buffet this year featuring grilled mahi mahi and chef-carved roast tenderloin of beef.

Merrill said the doors to the Donaldson Dining Hall will open at 7 p.m. for the event.

Summer Registration June 3 - 4

Registration for students who plan to attend ABAC during the summer term will take place June 3 from 2 - 6 p.m. and June 4 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. New students must attend an orientation session on June 3 beginning at 9 a.m. in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center before registering for classes. Students who are already enrolled at ABAC may register on the Internet if they have met with their advisors.

ABAC Sports Roundup

The intercollegiate athletics program at Abraham Baldwin had one of its greatest years ever. Of our six intercollegiate sports, four were crowned state champions. Here is a final look at the accomplishments of the ABAC teams during the 2001-2002 year.

The men's tennis team of Coach Alan Kramer advanced to a second place finish in the national tournament after winning the state title and compiling a record of 11-10. The Golden Fillies' fast pitch softball team of Coach Donna Campbell won a state title and wound up ninth in the nation with a final record of 31-23. The Golden Fillies' tennis team of Coach Alton Hudgins won its eighth straight state title and finished sixth in the nation.

The women's basketball team of Coach Julie Conner won the state title in only its second year. The Fillies finished with a record of 16-16. The baseball team of Coach Steve Janousek wound up with a record of 27-26 and was eliminated in the state tournament in Albany. The men's basketball team of Coach Robert Moore wound up with a record of 21-9, but lost in the first round of the state tournament in Atlanta. Congratulations to these coaches and their athletes for the fine way they represented ABAC during the year.
