Relay for Life Friday
The annual Relay for Life will be held at
the ABAC track on Friday and Saturday.
The relay is scheduled to run 7 p.m.-7 a.m. The ABAC team will be much
in evidence. The big question is will
President Mike Vollmer have to shave his head or not?
Honor Four Retirees
Tuesday
All ABAC students, faculty, staff, and
administrators are invited to the annual retirement reception in the Donaldson
Dining Hall from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
This year=s retirees include Vivian Pearman, Secretary to the President, who is
retiring after 33 years; Dr. Charlotte Pfeiffer, Professor in the Division of Humanities,
who is retiring after 22 years; Nancy Scott, Assistant Professor in the
Division of Business Administration, who is retiring after 21 years; and Garth
Webb, Director of Admissions, who is retiring after 28 years of service. The food will be fabulous, and the fellowship
will be even better.
Concert Choir on
Tuesday
The
ABAC Concert Choir will be featured in its spring concert on Tuesday at 7:30
p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Tift County High School. There is no admission charge. Also performing at the concert will be the
Darton College and the Georgia Southwestern State University concert choirs.
Tuesday=s concert represents the culmination of a concert series which began on
Sunday in Americus and continues tonight in the Darton College Theater.
During each event the three choirs will
perform a set of seven pieces by American composer Randall Thompson, known as Frostiana. The pieces are a collection of poems by
American poet laureate Robert Frost.
They will also sing a set of three spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan,
including Little David, Play on Your
Harp; Hear My Prayer; and Ride On, King Jesus. The concerts will conclude with the rousing
Battle Hymn of the Republic arranged by Peter Wilhousky.
In Tuesday=s event, the ABAC Concert Choir will also perform Daemon Irrepit
Callidus by Hungarian composer Gyorgy Orban, Psalm 150 by Brazilian
composer Ernani Aguiar, and Crn-Bel or Black/White - the song
of the Grasshopper by Croatian composer and conductor Igor Kuljeric.
State Tourneys This
Weekend
The Golden Stallions of Coach Alan Kramer
will aim for the Region XVII State Championship Saturday at the ABAC Tennis
Center. The Fillies of Coach Alton
Hudgins played in their state tournament here on Saturday. Results were not available at presstime. The Golden Fillies= softball team of Coach Donna Campbell will play in the state tournament
at the Hamilton Complex here in Tifton Friday and Saturday.
Speech Showcase April
29
The Lew Akin Speech Showcase will be
presented April 29. The best speaker
from each class will represent that class in a preliminary round at 4 p.m. in
Conger Hall, Rooms 315 and 317. The
final round will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Conger Hall, Room 319. Join us for the spring edition of the 33rd
Annual Showcase.
Basketball Banquet
Thursday
Former ABAC Head Coach Benny Dees will be
the guest speaker at the Golden Stallions and Golden Fillies basketball banquet
Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall. Dees was ultra successful at ABAC and has also
been head coach at the University of Wyoming, Virginia Commonwealth, and
the University of New Orleans. Tickets to the event are $25 for couples and
$15 for singles. All proceeds will go to
benefit ABAC basketball. For tickets
call Coach Robert Moore at 3932 or Coach Julie Conner at 3927.
Faculty/Staff Honored
Faculty members, staff members, and
administrators were honored Friday at the Spring Semester Picnic for their
years of service to the institution.
Retirees honored included Vivian Pearman, Dr. Charlotte Pfeiffer, Nancy
Scott, and Garth Webb. Honored with
plaques for 30 years of service were Dennis Bush and Brenda Sellers. Honored for 25 years of service were Dr. Ray
Barber, Ray Miller, Jennifer Murphy, Pathelyn Smith, and Donnie Stone.
Recognized for 20 years of service were Dr.
Rod Brown, Joel Bruce, Joyce Cogdell, Murray Fender, Stephanie Holcombe, and
Ray Woods. Fifteen-year honorees were
Bruce Applewhite, Dr. Jerry Davis, Ernest Kelly, Calvin Lee, and Pam Leonard.
Honored for 10 years of service were Phyllis
Bennett, Kay Billings, Keetra Branch, Scotty Funderburk, Bryan Golden, Wanda
Golden, Lum Roberts, Sharry Sackor, and Dr. Herbert Shippey.
Recognized for five years of service were
John B. Davis, III, Gary Dicks, Lisa
Forshee, Lonnie Gibson, Sandra Giles, Stephane Hightower, Carlos Howard, Diane
Jackson, Steve Janousek, Trina Jones, Etta Lee, Angie Newbern, Dr. Malcolm
Rainey, Kiplan Smith, Leonard Smith, and Joyce Willis.
Maymester Begins May
6
Registration for the Maymester at ABAC has
been brisk. Registrar Beth Saxon said
918 students had already registered for the summer term, and well over 850
students had early registered for the fall term. Internet registration for the Maymester and
for the summer will continue beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday through 8 a.m. on
May 6. Internet registration for the
summer will not be available during the Maymester, but will be available from 8
a.m. on May 28 until the end of the drop-add period at 5 p.m. on June 6.
Slight Tuition
Increase
The Board of Regents of the University
System of Georgia said tuition at two-year colleges across the state will
increase from $640 per semester to $666 per semester beginning with the fall
term. ABAC=s fees on top of tuition are scheduled to remain at $206 per
semester. You may recall that tuition
did not increase at two-year colleges across the state last year.
The General Assembly has also approved next
year=s budget which includes a 3.25 merit pay raise for University System
employees. Merit pay increases take
effect at the beginning of a faculty member=s contract and on Oct. 1 for non-faculty.
Note of Sympathy
The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Billy
Purcell whose mother, Alice Purcell, passed away on April 14. Please keep this family in your thoughts and
prayers.
Mayor Here Today
Tifton Mayor Paul Johnson will be visiting
ABAC today at 2:30 p.m. in Room 319 of Conger Hall. He will discuss the state of the Tifton
community and economy. All faculty,
staff, and students are invited to attend as a part of City Government Week.

Care and Concern
Ja=Nay Windmoller is convalescing at home after having her gall bladder
removed last week. Pattie Clark is also
recuperating at home after a car accident last week. Please keep both these members of the ABAC
Family in your thoughts and prayers.
Abraham Baldwin
Family
Dr. Jeff Gibbs served as a judge for
the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Education on April 16 for
the seven colleges in the area DTAE consortium. Fran Kinchen, Dina Willis, and Bam
Pirkle attended the Georgia Division Certification and Development Workshop
at Lake Lanier this past weekend. Pirkle
received her recertification as a Certified Professional Secretary.
Sheila Hughes and the ABC Forensics
Team attended the Phi Rho Pi National Forensics Tournament and Convention in
Fort Worth, Texas on April 6-14. Sherrie
Hines received the Award of Merit.
Hughes chaired the Rules Committee, the Awards Committee, and served on
the Publications Committee. She
coordinated and attended the national business meeting, southeastern regional
meetings, and NPDA Community College board meeting. She also coordinated judges for the
tournament.
Ten Student Georgia Association of Educators
members from ABAC traveled to Atlanta on April 6-7 with Advisor Sue Wilson
to attend the organization=s state conference. The ABAC
chapter was runner-up in the Chapter Display Award contest, second only to
Clark Atlanta, a four-year institution.
Dr. Maggie Martin and Arlene
Bailey administered the National ACT to 17 students from 11 different
communities on April 6. Martin also
administered UGA/Mercer=s non-traditional Ph.D. Pharmacy Test to two students on April 20.
Garth Webb and Carlos Howard
attended the Savannah Spring PROBE Fair on April 14-15. Howard also visited Groves, Jenkins, and
Jordan high schools last week. He also
represented ABAC at Career Day at Flint River Tech on April 18.
