Spring Enrollment Sets Record

Figures recently released by the Registrar's Office at Abraham Baldwin show a spring 2002 semester enrollment of 2,656 students, an increase of 8.4 percent over the spring 2001 semester. The Equivalent Full-Time (EFT) enrollment for Spring 2002 is 1,947, a 10.1 percent increase from the EFT enrollment for Spring 2001. The EFT enrollment figure represents the number of students carrying 12 or more hours.

This enrollment represents the largest spring enrollment in the history of ABAC. The fall semester enrollment was also a record with 2,857 students.

The recent report reflects an almost even division in gender at the college, with female enrollment at 54.1 percent. A total of 95 percent of ABAC students are Georgia residents. During the spring semester, 28 international students are enrolled, in addition to 116 students from states other than Georgia.

Wilson Named Interim Chair

Sue Wilson will serve for the next year as Interim Chair of the Division of Social Science. She will begin her duties on June 1. Wilson will fill the position vacated by Dr. Caroline Helms, who will serve as Interim Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Wilson came to ABAC two years ago, after having served for a number of years as an administrator and teacher in the Tift County Public School System.

'Icy Sparks' Author April 4

The next edition of the Tom M. Cordell Distinguished Lecture Series will be held on April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cordell Conference Room of the Carlton Center.

The featured speaker will be author Gwyn Hyman Rubio whose debut novel, Icy Sparks, was listed as a "notable book of the year" in 1998 by The New York Times. When Oprah Winfrey selected the novel for her book club in May 2001, it became a bestseller.

Free tickets to the lecture can be picked up in the Public Relations Office on the second floor of Tift Hall. Because of limited seating, everyone attending the lecture must have a ticket.

Homecoming Dining Extravaganza

The annual Homecoming Dinner and Dance at ABAC, "Up, Up & Away . . . Tour the U.S.A.," will offer an evening of extraordinary food served in a thematic setting. The dinner and dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on April 5 in the Donaldson Dining Hall. Alumni Director Nancy Coleman said the event is open to anyone who would like to attend at a cost of $20 per person. She said attendees do not have to be ABAC alumni.

Food Services Director B. J. Smith and her ARAMARK staff have selected a variety of foods from around the country. The dining experience will begin in Georgia, featuring salads made with Georgia products, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, peanuts, and pecans. Next, diners will enjoy foods from the coast, including a low country boil with shrimp, crab legs, sausage, whole new potatoes, and corn on the cob. Foods from Louisiana will include ragin' cajun chicken, red beans and rice, and tomatoes and okra.

The dining experience will move on to foods from Texas, featuring baby back ribs, baked beans, and Texas toast. Foods from San Francisco and the Orient will include stir fry chicken, beef with vegetables, fried rice, egg rolls with dipping sauce, and fortune cookies. Also featured will be the "Heart of the Sea" Newberg over puff pastry from the Pacific Northwest.

Foods from Chicago will include chef carved prime rib with horseradish and au jus and assorted rolls. The dessert extravaganza from New York includes fresh fruit, pecan tartlets, fruit tartlets, eclairs, cannoli, chocolate cups, petit fours, lemon diamonds, hazelnut torte, and New York style cheesecake.

Diners can finish the evening with a cup of coffee from the coffee bar, which includes specialty coffees, regular and decaffeinated coffees, and Irish Crème and French Vanilla accompanied by whipped cream, shaved chocolate, candied orange peel, and cinnamon.

While enjoying their coffee, patrons can listen to the music of the Jim Newton Band of Tifton.

Tickets for the dinner/dance are $20 per person for adults and $7.50 for children ages 4-11 and should be purchased in advance at the Alumni Office. Tickets purchased on the same day will be assessed a $2 fee at the door. For additional information, contact the Alumni Office at 386-3321.
