Ahead
ABAC will close on Thursday and Friday of this week for the Thanksgiving
holidays. The college will reopen on
Monday at 8 a.m. The college will be
closed Dec. 23-27 for the Christmas holidays and will reopen on Dec. 30 at 8
a.m.

FOCUS December 9
The next edition of this prized publication will appear in your boxes on
Dec. 9. If you have information for the FOCUS, please turn it in to the Public
Relations Office by noon on Dec. 5. That
will be the final issue for the 2002 calendar year
Music
Recital December 4
The annual fall student music recital featuring music majors at ABAC
will be held at noon on Dec. 4 in the Chapel of All Faiths.
ACE
on December 3
A
new program focusing on learning opportunities for adults called the Adult
College Entry (ACE) Program is now available at Abraham Baldwin.
A
“Get Acquainted Meeting” for anyone who is interested in learning more about
the program will be held Dec. 3 from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in Room 4 in King Hall on
the ABAC campus.
The
program provides a system of support services that will prepare adults for
college entry and success.
In
the ACE Program, students will be with other adults who are also just starting
college. They will learn valuable skills to help them succeed in college, including
note taking, time management, and various study skills in a program tailored to
their personal needs and goals.

Fillies
at Home Tonight
The undefeated defending state champion Golden Fillies of ABAC will play
their first home game of the 2002-2003 season tonight
at 6 p.m. against North Florida. Come
out to Gressette Gym and support Coach Julie Conner’s team. The Fillies are 6-0 for the year. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on WKZZ
with Bookstore Manager Emory Johnson at the play-by-play microphone. Tune in to 92.5 FM.
Doubleheader
on December 2
The Fillies and Stallions will play a basketball home court doubleheader
on Dec. 2 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Gressette Gym. Florida Community College provides the
opposition. Both games will be broadcast
on WTIF 107.5 FM with Public Relations Director Mike Chason at the play-by-play
microphone.
The Fillies and Stallions will play another doubleheader beginning at 4
p.m. on Dec. 7 with the Stallions hosting Brewton Parker and the Fillies taking on Hillsborough.
Admissions
to Move
The Admissions Office is scheduled to move from its existing Weltner
Hall location to Tift Hall on Dec. 6.
Admissions personnel scheduled to make the move include Angie Palmer,
Joyce Willis, Bruce
Applewhite, Carlos Howard, and Traci Bryan.
Health
Club on Campus
ABAC’s first ever Fit for Life Health Club for
faculty, staff, and students will hold its kick-off lunch on Dec. 5 at noon in
the southwest corner of the dining hall.
Health club membership is free, although there may be a small fee for
some activities.
Membership
includes confidential fitness assessment, optional health screenings, monthly
wellness and nutrition seminars, weight management classes, fitness training
activities such as tennis, walking, running weight training, aerobics, dancing
and competitive sports. Planning committee members include Wanda
Golden, Pattie Clark, Herb Hendrix, B.J. Smith, and Diane Kilgore. For more information, contact Kilgore at

Holiday
Music December 3
Dr. Susan Roe has invited all faculty and staff to a celebration of
holiday music in the Chapel of All Faiths on Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. She said President and Mrs. Mike Vollmer will
provide refreshments after the concert.
New
Chimes Installed
Take a listen to the new chimes now installed in the Chapel of All
Faiths. The new system will play music
at various times during the day, and we expect lots of Christmas music during
the month of December. Wayne Jones is
coordinating the chimes.

Face in Moultrie
Debbie Cagle is the new Senior Secretary at ABAC on the Square in
Moultrie. She was previously the Public
Relations/Foundation Event Coordinator for Colquitt Regional Medical Center for
11 years. She and her husband, Tommy, have
five children.

support during my surgery. It is a real
blessing to see how the ABAC Family comes together when someone is in

Contributions Campaign Update
The
final total of ABAC contributions for the State Charitable Contributions
campaign is $6,811. Seventy
three faculty, staff. and retirees
participated. Of that total United Way
of Southwest Georgia was designated for $5,107. Percentages of participation
are now being determined, and the winner of the Pizza Party will be announced soon. Thanks to all who participated.
Care
& Concern
Jim May’s father underwent heart surgery on Nov. 19 after suffering a
heart attack. DiAnn Courtoy’s mother has been hospitalized due to a blood clot
in her arm. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

of Sympathy
The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Fran Kinchen
whose brother-in-law, David Kinchen, passed away last weekend. Sympathy is also extended to Herb Hendrix
whose mother-in-law, Doris Palmer, passed away on Nov. 17. Please keep both these families in your

decorated the Tifton Mall for Christmas.

Family
Dr. Bobbie Robinson, Dr. Su Senapati,
and Dr. Kelly Swilley from the
Division of Humanities presented a panel of papers entitled Women Writing Men at the South Atlantic
Modern Language Association held in Baltimore on Nov. 15-17. Robinson presented “A Good Man is Hard to
Find: Patricia Cornwell Writes Men,” and
Swilley presented “Beaumont, Eliot and the Beast in Sexual Exchange.” Senapati chaired the session and presented
“Mocking Birds and Small Gods: Old and
New Metaphors for Representing Men.”
Cheryl Biggs attended the
Administrative Committee on Learning Disorders meeting at Georgia College and
State University on Nov. 12, as well as the GADSPHE board meeting at Georgia
State University on Nov. 13.
James Weeks attended a National Science
Foundation sponsored workshop at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., on
Nov. 13-17. The workshop covered
modeling and physics education research and is a part of the Two-Year College
Physics Workshops for the 21st Century.
Eleven ABAC students, Jimmy Felton, and
Dr. Ed Seagle were invited to
participate in the 2002 IBS Warburg Cup Gold Tournament matching the USA
against the Rest of the World Team on Nov. 13-17 at Sea Island’s famous “Five
Star” Seaside Golf Course on St. Simons Island.
Responsibilities included getting up at 4 a.m. and working on the golf
course until 8 a.m. and then following the golfers and raking bunkers and
whipping greens until all rounds were finished.
President Mike Vollmer walked
with Arnold Palmer and Gary Player during Saturday’s competition. Some of the other golf legends in competition
were Tom Watson, Curtis Strange, Tom Lehman, Nick Faldo, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin,
Ray Floyd, Paul Azinger, and Berhard Langer. This was an excellent experiential learning
activity for these students.
