McKie Selected as FFA VP

   ABAC student Joel McKie has been selected as the Southern Region Vice President of the National FFA organization.  McKie, a sophomore agri-business major from Abbeville, will take a one-year leave from his studies to fulfill responsibilities associated with the office. 

   The 19-year-old son of Eddie and Kay McKie is expected to travel more that 100,000 miles, meet with top leaders in business and industry, visit approximately 40 states, and participate in an international agricultural experience tour to Japan.  His responsibilities will include developing student workshops, setting board policy to shape the future of the organization, and promoting agricultural literacy. 

   McKie is in second year as a member of the ABAC Ambassadors. 

 

Student Success Workshops

   The Academic Assistance Center will host three Student Success Workshops in coming weeks. 

   Don’t Be HOPE-less will be presented by Lyn Smith on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Carlton Center, Room 202.   Dr. Larry McGruder will present How To Study History at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Carlton Center, Room 202.   

   Wendy Harrison will lead Compass Review for English on November 22 at 2 p.m.  Call Kim Ascani for more information at 7252.

 

 

Beauty Revue Tuesday

   Ms. Abraham Baldwin 2003 will be crowned on Tuesday at the 35th annual ABAC Beauty Revue.  The Revue is sponsored by the ABAC Ambassadors. 

   The event will feature 44 contestants who will compete in casual wear and evening gowns.  They will also be judged on a written essay and an interview with the judges.  The Revue begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall.  Admission is $3.

   Margaret Brodgon, ABAC’s Director of Procurement, will direct the pageant, and Pam Leonard, Administrative Assistant in the Public Relations Office, will serve as producer.

   Musical entertainment will be provided by the ABAC Jazz Band, under the direction of Don Coates, and the Jazz Choir, under the direction of Wayne Jones.  Director of Public Relations Mike Chason will serve as master of ceremonies.  Ms. Abraham Baldwin 2002, Joanie Padgett, will crown the winner.

 

Ribbon Cut on November 18

   Mark your calendar for 11 a.m. on Nov. 18 for the ribbon cutting for the new Enrollment Services Offices in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center.  The one stop shop operation includes the Registrar’s Office and personnel from the Admissions Office and Business Office.

 

Presentation on Friday

   Everyone is invited to a presentation on working with deaf and hard of hearing students in higher education on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Cordell Conference Room, Section A.  Katherine Bruni, an English instructor at Georgia Perimeter College to students who are deaf or hard of hearing, will lead the session which is a part of the Georgia Association of Disability Service Providers in Higher Education (GADSPHE) Southwest Regional Workshop.  Contact Cheryl Biggs for more information at 3489.

 

Brooks Wins Speech Forum

   Congratulations to Robert Brooks who won the 34th annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase.  He presented a persuasive speech on sleep.  Thanks to all who participated in this fall’s event.  Special thanks to the judges for the Showcase, Tom Call, Mary Jane Rootes, Su Senapati, Teresa Williams, Carolyn Black, DiAnn Cortoy, Vonda Doss, Yolanda Emery, Wendy Harrison, Paul Miller, Amy Willis, Andrea Willis, and Sue Wilson.

 

Career Forum Thursday

   Job Placement Coordinator Jonathan Harrington reports there will be a Career Forum from 6-8 p.m. Thursday focusing on careers in allied health.  Professionals from the areas of physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, health education, and nursing will be present.  The forum will take place in the Cordell Conference Room, Section B. 

   Harrington also said a representative from True Green Lawncare will be recruiting interested students in the Conference Room of the Horticulture Building from 1-5 p.m. on Nov. 19.  Call Harrington for more information at 7111.

 

Stallions at Home Thursday

   The Golden Stallions of Coach Robert Moore will take on Santa Fe at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Gressette Gym.  At presstime, the Stallions had a 2-1 overall record.  The Golden Fillies’ first home game is at 6 p.m. on Nov. 25 against North Florida.

 

Job Placement Workshop

   A seminar on Interviewing Skills will be presented by Dr. Jonathan Harrington on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Conger Hall, Room 108.  Students can learn the do’s and don’ts when interviewing for a job.  Information on how to answer possible interview questions will also be discussed.  Call 7111 for more information.  

 

Official Holidays Ahead

   The campus will be closed on Nov. 28-29 for the Thanksgiving holidays and will also be closed on Dec. 23-27 for the Christmas holidays.

 

Jack Hammer in Storage

   Stephen Rakestraw reports that the jack hammer is in storage for the present time.  All the folks in Conger and Branch halls will surely issue a celebratory shout at that news.  The next scheduled jack hammering will be in mid-December after classes have ended.

   The forming of the east fountain plaza for the Pedestrian Mall will begin this week.  Also light poles will be installed, and the pouring of concrete will take place around Conger Hall.  Be very careful in this area.

 

Congratulations!

   Gary and Tracy Dicks are the proud parents of a baby girl born on Nov. 6.  Erin Pate Dicks weighed nine pounds, five ounces.  Congratulations to all!

 

Note of Thanks

   I would like to thank everyone for the prayers and cards that I received during my surgery.  It makes recovery easier knowing that you have friends that care.  Please keep me in your prayers.

Contributions Campaign Update

   As of Nov. 7 the ABAC employee contributions  to the State Charitable Contributions Campaign totaled $4,921 with 52 participating.   Thanks to all who have contributed toward this year’s campaign.  If you have been meaning to contribute but just haven’t gotten around to it, now is the perfect time.  You are sitting at your desk, reading your FOCUS and you can fill out your form right now. If you have misplaced your form call Bam Pirkle (7232) and she will send you another.  Donations will be accepted through November 15.  If you have questions please contact Bertha Daniel.

Sylvester Info Session Tuesday

   ABAC will offer an information session on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Governmental Building in Sylvester for students who may want to attend the ABAC class in Sylvester this spring. 

   One course, Introduction to General Psychology (PSYC 1101), will be offered on Tuesdays from 6-8:40 p.m.  Information about admissions, registration, and financial aid will be available.

Nashville Info Session November 19

   ABAC will offer an information session on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Berrien County Chamber of Commerce in Nashville for students who may want to attend the ABAC classes in Nashville this spring.  Two classes will be offered.  

 

Note of Sympathy

   The ABAC Family expresses sympathy to Hubert Wood whose mother, Olivi Wood, passed away on Nov. 1.  Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

 

ABAC Family

   Angie Palmer, Robin Poor, and ABAC student Ben Kennedy attended the National FFA Convention held in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 30-Nov. 2.  ABAC was part of the Georgia Consortium that included Georgia FFA, the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and Fort Valley State University.  Kennedy, a member of the collegiate FFA at ABAC, was one of 30 Georgians to receive the American FFA Degree at the convention.

   Dr. Charlotte Pfeiffer, Professor Emeritus, has written a review of two novels by Japanese writer Sawako Ariyoshi which appear in the November/December issue of Journal of Japanese Trade and Industry.

   Phyllis Bennett attended a state-wide meeting of Learning Support Directors and the Board of Regents LS Advisory Committee at Macon State College on Oct. 30.

   Sheila Hughes hosted the Third Annual Stallion Forensics Tournament on Oct. 6-7.  While there is no longer an official forensics team at ABAC, it was an opportunity to bring people from the Southeast to our campus.  ABAC students Lori Gilbert, Elizabeth Shirley, and Trisha Stephens competed in the tournament and placed, fifth, seventh, and eighth. 

   Dr. Maggie Martin administered the UGA/Mercer College of Pharmacy Non-traditional Pharmacy Ph.D. Test to one person on Nov. 1.

   Dr. Maggie Martin, Ellen Bullington, Dr. Jonathan Harrington, Annie Sims, Ellen Resta, Sherin Nixon, Sandra Adams, Phyllis Kester, Phyllis Bennett, and Rita Wade administered the Regents’ Test to 342 students on Nov. 5.  Special thanks to Joyce Cogdell.

   Robin Poor represented ABAC at College Fairs in 24 northwest Georgia counties and Counselor’s Workshops in Atlanta and Rome in September and October.  She also visited schools in Barrow, Coweta, Fannin, and Fulton counties in October and in Clayton County on Nov 4.  4.

   Dr. Maggie Martin, Margie Senkbeil, Arlene Bailey, Rita Wade, Debbie Riner, and Ellen Resta administered the National SAT on Nov. 2 to 85 students.  Thanks to Bernice Corbin and Public Safety.

   Patrick O’Brien, U.S. Golf Association Green Section Southeastern Director, was on campus on Nov. 5 to give a PowerPoint presentation to two classes of ABAC turfgrass students.  The presentation was on what problems the turf managers have faced in the southeast in 2002.
