Pedestrian Mall
Continues
Demolition of
Dormitory Drive on the north side of Conger Hall is scheduled to take place
this week as the Pedestrian Mall continues to take shape. Also, demolition of a part of the north dining
hall parking lot is anticipated within the next few days. A few parking spaces will need to be
relocated. Those persons will be
notified.
UGA at ABAC
Thursday
Representatives
from the University of Georgia will be on campus Thursday at 6 p.m. in the
Cordell Conference Room of the Carlton Center to present information on their
brand new major beginning at ABAC in the fall of 2003. The Agriscience and
Environmental Systems major will be the first program from the College of
Agriculture and Environmental Sciences offered away from the Athens
campus. It will also be a unique major
in that it will not be offered on the main campus. All ABAC students and other interested
persons are invited to attend this meeting.
Evening and Off-Campus Programs Director Gail Dillard will be the
contact person at ABAC for this program.
Great Job at Expo!
Thanks to all
those persons who made the ABAC exhibit at the annual Sunbelt Ag Expo a very
positive experience for some 200,000 visitors.
Don Coates, Eugene Wyles, the Dixieland Band, and the ABAC Jazz Band
performed in a marvelous fashion on a rainy Tuesday. Wayne Jones and the Jazz Chorus delighted a
large crowd on Wednesday, and Rocio Cardenas and the Sabor Latino Dancers
provided an energizing experience on Thursday.
The ABAC Ambassadors served as emcees for all the shows. Assisting with the exhibit were Angie Palmer,
Bruce Applewhite, Traci Bryan, Dr. Gail Dillard, Kay Powell, Nancy Coleman, and
Mike Chason. The Physical Plant staff
did a fine job in preparing the building.
Fast-Track This
Spring
In an effort to find ways to help non-traditional
students complete college in a timely manner, Abraham Baldwin will experiment
with alternative scheduling for certain courses beginning this spring semester.
One scheduling
experiment will take place in the Humanities Division. Scheduling changes will
include a fast-track, eight-week schedule for one section of Composition II (ENGL
1102) and one section of Human Communication (COMM 1100). ENGL 1102 will
meet the first half of the semester (January-February) on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 5:30 - 8:20 p.m., and COMM 1100 will meet March-April in the
same time slot. In addition, the Humanities Division will offer a Saturday
morning class, Composition I (ENGL 1101), from 9 - 11:40 a.m. on campus. For additional information, contact Dr. Gail Dillard
at 386-7154.
New Home for Registrar
As of today, the
Registrar’s Office should be operating in new offices in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center. Registrar’s Office personnel will be joined
by the records section of the Admissions Office (Anita White, Michelle Barton,
and Anita Hobbs) and student accounts from the Business Office (Stefane Hightower). The
new office is just around the corner from Financial Aid, Housing, and all the
services we are accustomed to in the Student Center. The office hours for the new office, now
titled Enrollment Services, are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday
from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. A grand opening will
be scheduled in days to come. Feel free
to visit at your leisure.
Alcohol Awareness
Week
October 21-25
is National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
Please focus your attention on several display tables and activities
sponsored by the Student Life Office.

at 3102 or Jeff Newberry at 3663.
Quiz Bowlers Roll
Dr. Erin
Campbell and the ABAC Quiz Bowl Team finished in second place in a field of 18
at a recent regional tournament. That is
the best performance to date by the team at a regional tourney. The ABAC squad defeated Valencia Community
College twice during the competition.
Valencia is a Quiz Bowl power. Congratulations
to the ABAC team.
Pancakes Ahead
The Golden
Fillies’ softball team is sponsoring its annual Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s
on Nov. 9 from 8-10 a.m. The cost of the
tickets is $6 per person. Order tickets
via email from Donna Campbell, or contact any softball player.
Ag Classic October

The Ag Classic
Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 28.
Alumni Director Nancy Coleman said spaces were almost filled at
presstime.
Flu Vaccinations
Flu
vaccinations are now available at the E.L. Evans Health Center. The cost for the vaccine is $10 for faculty,
staff, and students. If possible, visit
the Health Center for your vaccination on Thursdays between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. ABAC Nursing students will be available at
that time.
Panel Discussion
October 29
ABAC’s Social
Science Division will hold a panel discussion on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. in the
Student Courtroom. In connection with
Janisse Ray’s book, Ecology of a Cracker
Childhood, Social Science faculty members will make brief presentations on
the issue of corporal punishment from the various perspectives represented in
the social sciences: history, sociology,
psychology, criminal justice, education and political science. After the presentations, the floor will be
open for discussion to all faculty, staff, and students.
Representatives
from DFCS and the Juvenile Court system will also be on hand to answer
questions or make relevant comments. Ray
wrote of the severe physical punishment she and her siblings endured during
childhood. While the issue did
predominate the book, it remains a real issue in our culture today. Call Susan Johnson for more details on the
event at 3451.
Notes of Thanks
Thank you all
for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers during the hospitalization of my
son. I am happy to report that he was
able to go home yesterday and is recuperating slowly but surely. Thanks again.

Another Record!
The Georgia
Southwestern State University four-year business program at ABAC reached a
record enrollment of 47 students this fall semester. ABAC faculty member Paul Miller, who serves
as liaison for the program, said the program began in 1998 with only 19
students. He said the ABAC program
accounts for 11 percent of Georgia Southwestern’s total business school
enrollment. ABAC also houses students in
four-year programs from Valdosta State and Macon State. In the
fall of 2003, UGA comes to the campus.
Albany State is also offering graduate courses here.
Care & Concern
Chloe McLemore
is recuperating after surgery on her shoulder to repair a torn ligament. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
