Thanks to All!

Thanks to the entire ABAC Family for pitching in and going above and beyond the call of duty when the Board of Regents and the Knowledge is Power Tour descended upon our campus last week.  Favorable comments were received from participants at both meetings, particularly on how beautiful the campus looked and the friendly attitude of all the people here.  It was a total team effort, and it turned out to be a terrific two days.  Thanks to all!

Chancellor Thomas Meredith said that he was impressed by what he saw on the ABAC campus during the two-day visit.

“Of all the schools in the University System of Georgia, ABAC is right up there with the best of them,” he said.  “I have the utmost confidence in President Mike Vollmer.  I am also impressed by the students.  Wherever they go after graduation, whether it is right into the workforce or on to UGA or another institution, ABAC students are successful.”

President to Cook Burgers

In appreciation of the fantastic effort put forth by the ABAC faculty and staff last week, President Mike Vollmer will be cooking hamburgers from noon-1:30 p.m. on Friday at The Meadows.  Please come by.

UGA Info Session October 24

Representatives from the University of Georgia will be on campus Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. in the Cordell Conference Room of the Carlton Center to present information on their brand new major beginning at ABAC in the fall of 2003.  The agri-science and environmental systems major will be the first program from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences offered away from the Athens campus.  It will also be a unique major in that it will not be offered on the main campus.  All ABAC students and other interested persons are invited to attend this meeting.  Evening and Off-Campus Programs Director Gail Dillard will be the contact person at ABAC for this program.

Registrar to Move October 21

Interim Registrar Beth Saxon said her office is tentatively scheduled to move its operation from Tift Hall to the One Stop Shop in the J. Lamar Branch Student Center on Oct. 21.  The One Stop Shop will include the entire Registrar’s operation, as well as representatives from the Business Office and the Admissions Office.

At some point in the future, the Admissions Office will move from its location in Weltner Hall to the offices vacated by the Registrar’s Office, and the Public Service and Business Outreach Center will move to the existing Admissions Office location.

Power Outage Today

A power outage affecting the Yow Forestry-Wildlife Building and Mitchell Hall will take place today.  Mitchell Hall students have been notified.  A new transformer is being put in to handle Yow and the new Ag Sciences Building.

Dormitory Drive Closed

Please keep in mind that Dormitory Drive is closed.  Construction on the Pedestrian Mall continues in that area.  Eventually, a portion of the drive will be reopened, and a few parking spaces will be available for Science and Mathematics faculty.  Please continue to check the ABAC Construction Zone at the ABAC website regarding additional construction on campus.

Alumni Welcomes New Secretary

Ashley Tompkins Purvis has joined the Alumni Office as the Senior Secretary.  She is a 2001 graduate of ABAC’s Business Information Technology program and was a student worker for the Office of Student Affairs.  She replaces Judy Shiflet, who has returned to the classroom as a fulltime student.

Landscapes Photography Contest

The ABAC Humanities Division is sponsoring a southern landscapes photography contest in relation to the book, Ecology of Cracker Childhood.    The contest is open to ABAC students, faculty, and staff.  Entry forms are available in the Humanities Division Office in King Hall, Room 1.

Black and white or color photographs depicting southern landscapes may be entered.  Entries must be suitable for exhibition on the Walker Display System.  Frames must have wires for hanging.  All photography must be matted or mounted professionally if not framed.

A maximum of five entries is allowed per individual.  Each entry must include the following information on the back of the photography:  name, address, phone number title, and date created.  All works must be original and created in the last five years.

Entries are due by Oct. 21 to King Hall, Room 1.  For more information, contact Dr. Gail Dillard at 7154 or Van McGriff at 3250.

Art Exhibit in Carlton Center

A juried exhibition for the Board of Regents at ABAC continues on the second floor of the Carlton Center in the Baldwin Library through Oct. 27.  It is sponsored by the Arts Students’ League.  Artwork is by A.W. Stegall, Shane Newman, Hallie Cantlebary, Edie Glass, Del Harwell, Allison Land, Allison Golden, Leah Adkinson, Emily Stanaland, Lauren Swan, Jessica Landman, and Gina Johnson.  Go by and see some great artwork by ABAC students.

Panel Discussion October 29

ABAC’s Social Science Division will hold a panel discussion on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. in the Student Courtroom.  In connection with Janisse Ray’s book, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, Social Science faculty members will make brief presentations on the issue of corporal punishment from the various perspectives represented in the social sciences:  history, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, education and political science.  After the presentations, the floor will be open for discussion to all faculty, staff, and students.

Representatives from DFCS and the Juvenile Court system will also be on hand to answer questions or make relevant comments.  Ray wrote of the severe physical punishment she and her siblings endured during childhood.  While the issue did predominate the book, it remains a real issue in our culture today.   Call Susan Johnson for more details on the event at 3451.

Congratulations!

Katrina and Rodney McCrae are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl.  Zipphorah Rose was born on Oct. 8 and weighed seven pounds, 12 ounces.  Everyone is doing fine.

Adrian Salter is the proud grandfather of Elixie Blair.  She weighed just over seven pounds and was 19˝ inches long.   Congratulations to all!

Contributions Campaign Update

Thanks to all who helped and all who attended the State Charitable Contributions Program Kick-off held Oct. 3.  This is the first year ABAC has held a Kick-off for this campaign, which is the only sanctioned fund-raising effort in University System institutions.

Also new to the ABAC campaign this year will be our United Way of South Central Georgia agencies’ displays at the Thursday Networking Luncheons.   Each Thursday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. two of the local United Way agencies will share a display table in the Magnolia Room.  They will be available to provide information about their agency and let ABAC employees know where their contributions are going.

Last year’s campaign raised $5,384.00 with 57 ABAC employees participating.  Of that total $4,454.00 was designated to go to our local United Way.   As of Oct. 9,  the ABAC employee contributions totaled  $3,556.00 with 40 participating.

Contributions will be accepted through Nov. 15.  If you have questions please contact Bertha Daniel, who is serving as the ABAC coordinator for the State Charitable Contributions Program for 2002.
