Loyd to Retire July 31
ABAC President Harold Loyd will retire from his position on July 31. Loyd joined the ABAC faculty in September of 1971. He assumed the presidency on Oct. 1, 1989.
"ABAC is a special place," the 55-year-old Loyd said. "I believe that students who enroll here get a great education, but beyond that they also catch that special ABAC spirit. It's a spirit that will remain with them the rest of their lives. The same will be true for me."
Loyd received his bachelor of science degree in general agriculture from Southwest Missouri State University and his master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri.
When Dr. Mary LeMar retired as the chair of the Business Division in the summer of 1973, Loyd served as interim chair of the division for two years before he was appointed chair on July 1, 1975. In 1985 he took on the added responsibilities as the director of the evening and off-campus programs. He also taught classes on a daily basis and continued to teach at least one class per year after being selected as president.
During his tenure, Loyd expanded ABAC's outreach tremendously. The college now offers classes in Moultrie, Fitzgerald, Valdosta, and Sea Island. Enrollment grew to an alltime high of 2,851 students during the fall quarter of 1992. Under Loyd's leadership, the ABAC Foundation has reached an unprecedented level in fundraising with a $1 million year last year and a $2.5 million year on the horizon for this year.
Significant new programs include hospitality management, poultry technology, and the building
of strong relationships with Valdosta State, Albany State, and Georgia Southwestern so that all
three now offer degrees on the ABAC campus. Loyd is also asking UGA to send ABAC a
bachelor's degree in agriculture. Loyd and his wife, Rowena, who retired in December, 1999
after 23 years with the ABAC Computer Center, plan to move back to their native Missouri at
some point in the future.
