Rabun Gap resident John Grist has spent his life in the mountains and has grown to love the outdoors. So it is no surprise that when he decided to attend ABAC, his area of study would be one that focuses on that field.

The golf turf management major has fit right in at ABAC, taking part in the Turf Club and the ABAC Ambassadors. In March, Grist will also be representing ABAC with other turfgrass students on an international trip to China.

“I like college life in general - living on campus, meeting new people, and getting involved with clubs and intramural sports,” Grist said.  “Build personal relationships with your instructors and meet someone new every chance you get and you will succeed.”

While attending the college, he has learned a lot about himself as well. “Work hard and be yourself. Don’t let other people’s opinions affect you,” Grist said.

After graduating from ABAC, Grist plans to move back to his hometown and work locally of a golf course, raise a family, a live happily in the mountains.

His enthusiasm for the outdoors is apparent in his favorite quote – “You don’t stop exploring because you get old; you get old because you stop exploring.”
