COCHRAN TENNIS PLAYER WINS NATIONAL TITLE FOR ABAC

TIFTON--Matthew Holland captured the grand prize at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s tennis tournament on May 15 when he won the national title at #6 singles for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Holland, a sophomore pre-medicine major from Cochran, defeated Laredo Community College’s Roberto Mateos 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.

“It was great,” Holland said.  “Last year I lost in the first round so I was really nervous during my first match.  After that, I settled down some.”

Holland said the butterflies in his stomach returned on the last point of the second set when he knew he was close to the national title.

“I was nervous but then when it was over the first thing I thought about was how much hard work it took to get to that point,” Holland said.

Coach Alan Kramer’s Stallions finished in third place in the tournament.  Laredo won the tourney for the fifth consecutive time, and Tyler finished second.

Besides his tennis expertise, Holland is a member of the ABAC Honors Program and the ABAC Ambassadors leadership organization.
