Welcome Week Activities for Freshmen Begin August 11 at ABAC

TIFTON – Over 1,000 freshmen will kick off their college careers on Aug. 11 when Welcome Week begins at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The annual event, now in its third year, will introduce new students to the college through a variety of activities and workshops throughout the week leading up to the start of the fall semester on Aug. 17.

Freshmen Learning Community students will get the opportunity to record the Welcome Week experience by creating iMovies.  The results of their efforts will then be shown in an iMovie Festival.

Activities during the week include a gigantic welcome rally in Gressette Gym, a concert, a dance party, ice cream social, volleyball, swimming, a scavenger hunt, academic information, an ABAC history and tradition session, an outdoor movie, and a student-led non-denominational worship service.

ABAC alumna Jodie Snow will be the keynote speaker at the Fall Convocation on Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. in Gressette Gym.  Snow will speak on the three principles of Welcome Week, “Character, Community, and Competence.” A picnic for all the students will follow after the session at the ABAC Lakeside student housing complex.

Dean of Students Bernice Hughes said a big part of Aug. 15 will be spent doing community service activities in various locations around Tifton.

"The community service is planned from 1-4 p.m., and those in need of help should call (229) 391-5140 or e-mail at bhughes@abac.edu by Aug. 11,” said Hughes.  “When students come here they become a part of the community, and it is a wonderful opportunity to make that connection with Tifton.”

Over 3,000 students are expected to attend classes at ABAC during the fall term.  Almost 1,300 of them will live on campus in either ABAC Lakeside or ABAC Place.
