ABAC To Celebrate 100th Birthday At Sunbelt Expo

TIFTON—Dr. David Bridges, president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, will be serving cake to celebrate the college’s 100th birthday at the annual Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition this year.  Alumni Director Nancy Coleman said a birthday celebration will be held at noon on Oct. 17 in the ABAC building, located just two blocks from the main entrance to the Expo site at Spence Field.

“We invite all our alumni and friends to join us as we eat birthday cake and listen to the ABAC Jazz Choir sing,” Coleman said.  “The Expo is always a great place to connect with our alumni as well as meet with prospective students.”

The ABAC stage is always loaded with top quality student entertainment, and this year is no exception.  Several of the top student vocalists at ABAC will perform on Oct. 16, and the Jazz Choir of Dr. Susan Roe will perform on Oct. 17.   Don Coates and the ABAC Jazz Band will be featured in shows on Oct. 18.

The ABAC Ambassadors will emcee all the shows.  They will also run an ABAC souvenir stand as well as a miniature putting green.  Members of the Horticulture Club will arrange plants and flowers around the exhibit, and the admissions office will provide plenty of information for the thousands of prospective students who attend the Expo.

For the first time, ABAC recruiters will have information about the two new four-year degrees available on the ABAC campus.  Classes in Diversified Agriculture and Turfgrass and Golf Course Management begin with the spring term in January, 2008.   As a state college in the University System of Georgia, ABAC offers primarily two-year degrees as well as selected four-year degrees.

ABAC just opened a 489-bed housing complex called ABAC Lakeside to accommodate an expected increase in enrollment because of the new degrees.  Earlier this year, Washington Monthly selected ABAC as one of the top 10 community colleges in the United States.

The Expo actually started as a series of small equipment shows on the ABAC campus in Tifton, Ga.   The event moved to the Spence Field site in 1978.  For more information on ABAC, interested persons can visit the web site at www.abac.edu.
