Rape: What to Do

What To Do If You Are Raped

  1. Tell someone about it. Call Tift County 911 at 9-911 if the incident occurred on this campus, or call the Rape Crisis Center at 912-889-RAPE.

  2. Get medical attention promptly. Go to a doctor or emergency room. They can check for injury, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy. NOTE: Do not bathe, shower, douche, brush your teeth or change clothes before the medical examination. During the examination, evidence of the rape will be collected.

  3. Report the rape. It is your decision whether to pursue legal action and testify in court, but you are encouraged to report the rape. There is a difference in reporting the attack and pressing charges. Reporting means giving the police a full account of what happened and a description of the rapist. Pressing charges means the police will arrest the suspected rapist so that he can stand trial for the crime.

  4. Seek counseling. Whether or not you report the rape, you should consult a trained counselor for help in dealing with the emotional aftermath of the assault.

The College has a counselor on staff, the ABAC Police can make arrangements for you to meet with the counselor. You can also contact them personally at 229-391-5135
