What To Do If You Are Raped
-
Tell someone about it. Call Tift County 911 at 9-911 if the incident occurred on this campus, or call the Rape Crisis Center at 912-889-RAPE.
- Get medical attention promptly. Go to a doctor or emergency room. They can check for injury, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy. NOTE: Do not bathe, shower, douche, brush your teeth or change clothes before the medical examination. During the examination, evidence of the rape will be collected.
- Report the rape. It is your decision whether to pursue legal action and testify in court, but you are encouraged to report the rape. There is a difference in reporting the attack and pressing charges. Reporting means giving the police a full account of what happened and a description of the rapist. Pressing charges means the police will arrest the suspected rapist so that he can stand trial for the crime.
- Seek counseling. Whether or not you report the rape, you should consult a trained counselor for help in dealing with the emotional aftermath of the assault.
The College has a counselor on staff, the ABAC Police can make arrangements for you to meet with the counselor. You can also contact them personally at 229-391-5135
