Harrasing Phone Calls

Obscene Harassing Phone Calls

The phone rings. It is 3 a.m. No, it's not Mom calling to say Dad just deposited $500 in your checking account. Instead you are greeted by a string of obscenities, heavy breathing, or silence. You have just become another victim of the crank caller. Some estimate that over a million such calls were made each year. Now that you have become a victim, here are some ways you can prevent repeat calls.

  • Hang up - As soon as the obscenities begin or you realize it is the crank caller, hang up!!

  • Don't talk to strangers - Be careful when the caller says that he or she is taking a survey. Say that you will call back after you verify the survey.

  • Don't play detective - Don't extend the call trying to figure out who is calling. This is the reaction the caller wants and needs.

  • Keep cool - Do not let the caller know you are upset or angry.

  • Place ads with caution - When placing an ad in a newspaper, use a newspaper or post office box number if possible. If you m'ust use your phone number, do not list your address.

  • Report obscene or harassing calls to ABAC Police - By reporting the incident to police, you will help us to prevent the caller from victimizing others. Use the call log included in this brochure.
