To Otis: The Greatest Dancer Unknown
Kennicia Marlin
First Place , Poetry

I feel.
I deny.
Two as if by failure.
My black eyes look amidst in sullen sockets,
utterly stunned and baffled at the generic surroundings.
My heart ponders as my overview attempts to reveal
the love making scene of the trees to the wind.
I embellish the ecstasy of simultaneous movement.
The gentle sway reminds me of the Upper Room-
I welcome the power of God.
I tremble lie stalk of grass in the presence of Mariah.
I humble myself like the wheat-
I bow.
Savoring the feel of love.
reaching climactic appeal.
I sigh for them.
Wishing I were them.
It soon came to pass.
I've grasped the iron bars of life in a cell.
that's held me captive since the enclosed walls of my mother's womb.
During incarceration, I found a blessing.
Let me explain.
It came to me like a thief in the night.
Quietly, with only the sounds of a restless conscience for alertness.
It revealed itself to me.
Mystically, like the hypnotizing eyes of a stranger.
It embraced me.
Passionately but yet strongly, with the unquenched powers of a Nubian mind.
It filled my soul with movement.
Imitating the ancient rhythmatic patterns of African Ceremonial dancers
performing for a Zulu king.
It calmed me.
Meekly, like a child waiting for bed time tucks ins.
It inspired me.
Spiritually, like the soulful lyrics of Mahalia Jackson.
Her voice being an instrument of praise.
It enlightened me.
Knowledge to things seen and unseen.
Appreciative of old wisdom.
my heart choreographed the stillness of silence.
As my prison door opened, and I set free,
I welcomed the spirit of God.
No longer are there chains holding me.
I am not afraid.
For fear is a spirit.
I am who I am-
The greatest dancer unknown.
One step.
Two steps.
Three steps performed light headed and wholeheartedly.
I lift my hands and arch my back.
Demonstrating the anointing.
Dancing like David.
