Fillie Field on the ABAC Campus For More Information Contact: 2012 ABAC Fastpitch Outlook
The Fillies have reloaded for the 2012 campaign.
Last year, the Fillies finished with a record of 22 wins and 27
losses and a 5th place finish in Region XVII.
The 2012 Fillies team will comprise of four returning sophomores
and 14 new freshmen players.
The Fillies will be a young team in 2012, but as the season progresses
it will be exciting to see just how good the young Fillies will develop.
“I feel this young team has the talent and as they develop, they
will be a contender for the GCAA title.
The ABAC fastpitch winning tradition is a strong one and we have
high hopes that we will get back on top this season.”
Coach
Campbell is excited to return four sophomores for the 2012 season who
all gained valuable experience during their freshman year.
Returning starters are Shelby Reed and Alex Payne.
Aleisha Edenfield and Pooja Patel are also returning players.
Shelby hit .248 with 7 doubles and 4 home runs while playing 3rd
base for the Fillies last season.
She will be a mainstay in the infield and is expected to have a
great sophomore year. Alex
won 13 games for the Fillies last season and had a 1.97 ERA with 127
strikeouts with only 19 base on balls.
She is one of the best pitchers in the GCAA and we expect her to
lead us back to the GCAA Title game in April.
Aleisha will be counted on to help with pitching duties for this
young Fillies team and Pooja, who is back from injuries is expected to
battle for playing time in the grass.
The fourteen
new Fillies are an exciting, talented group of players who have worked
hard this fall to learn the Fillie system. They bring a new attitude and
freshness to the Fillie program.
The Fillies outfield will see six new faces in 2012.
Chelsea Littlejohn from Collins Hill High School, Jessi Jones
from Lee County H.S., Heather Bishop from Lowndes County, Deprise
Henderson from Clinch County, Kimberly Jewell from Alexander H.S. as
well as Jeanna Krause will battle for time in the grass.
“I am excited to have this group of outfielders, Chelsea is a great
athlete and will be counted on heavily on defense as well as her stick.
Jessi is just a competitor and loves the game and I expect Jessi
to make things happen in 2012.
Heather and Deprise are natural outfielders who both get a great
first step on the ball and I expect them to be fun to watch.
Kim has natural ability and as she keeps working she will be an
asset and Jeanna will battle to see action in the grass as well as 1b.
The Fillie infield will be brand new as well in 2012.
Savanna Berkhiser
from Grayson, Lauren Thrasher from Camden County, Logan Cooper from
Lowndes County H.S., Joele Cummings from will all see playing time for
the Fillies.
“I am excited to have Savanna and Lauren as our middle infielders as
they are both natural athletes who are fundamentally sound.
They both know the game and will be fun to watch in 2012.
Logan has worked hard this Fall and has developed well and I
expect her to see time at each corner.
Joele was a huge surprise this Fall as she developed as a solid
2nd baseman and hit well this Fall season.
The Fillie pitching staff
has added three new freshmen.
Morgan Bell from Worth County High School, Lauren Thrasher from
Camden, and Alexis Ricks from Perry H.S.
“Morgan is a hard worker and I am looking forward to the great
things from her this season. Alexis is working hard as well and with
more development I expect her to contribute well in 2012.
Although Lauren will be a mainstay at shortstop, she will also
see time in the circle.”
Campbell’s
expectations for 2012:
“The 14 new freshmen players worked hard this Fall and have
brought a new eagerness and energy.
Although we will be a young team, it should be fun to see how
this Fillie team will progress in the Spring.
We are expecting Alex and Shelby to have great Sophomore year’s
and Aleisha and Pooja’s experience and maturity to help this young team
grow. This group of
sophomore players were a joy to coach in 2011 and I am excited to see
what they will bring back this season.
This fall has been great, as this freshman class has improved
tremendously. I believe this
team has the potential to battle and contend for the GCAA title in
April. With this many new
faces the competition for playing time is a bonus as the players were
motivated to work harder than ever this past Fall.
The chemistry on the team has been good and if that remains the
case in the Spring, then it will be a great year for the Fillies. Each
year I always feel that we have an excellent chance to get back on top
of the GCAA if we can stay healthy and continue to improve and this
season is no different. We
have a lot of improving to do, but so far I couldn’t be more pleased
with the effort they have shown.
As the players continue to work, they will improve as they make
that necessary transition from the high school level to the college
level.”
A highlight this season will be playing over fifty games and traveling
to the JUCO Kickoff Classic in Tampa, Fla. this January.
The Fillies will compete with some of the best Florida teams
during their season before they face their conference opponents.
