Music Department Faculty in Concert at ABAC August 22

Faculty members in the Music Department of the School of Arts and Sciences at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will exercise their vocal and instrumental talents on Aug. 22 in a Fine Arts Faculty Showcase at 7 p.m. in Howard Auditorium. The event is open to the public at no charge.

Dr. Johnny Evans, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, will speak prior to the performance, which will serve as a kick-off to the 16th season of the First Tuesday Concert Series.

Performers in the entertainment lineup include Dr. Thomas Heflin, assistant professor of jazz; Wayne Jones, Arts Connection Director; Dr. Andy Lagrimas, assistant professor of piano and theory; Dr. Brian Ray, professor of English and theatre; Dr. Susan Roe, choral music director and fine arts department head; and Marti Schert, instructor in voice.

Heflin will be joined by students from the ABAC Jazz Ensemble, as well as Landon Cowart, a graduate of ABAC’s associate of arts in music from Sylvester; Jessica Wade, a biology major from Douglas; and Kenny Pratt, a music–instrumental major from Tifton.  The group will perform a selection of jazz standards.

Jones will sing “It is Enough” from “Elijah.”  Lagrimas will play two sonatas, “Sonata in D minor, K. 1” and “Sonata in B minor, K. 27.”  Ray will recite King Lear’s soliloquies from “The Tragedy of King Lear” and the introduction monologue, “The Impossible Dream,” from “Man of La Mancha.”

Roe will sing “Quando me’n vo” from “La Boheme.”  Jones will join Roe for the duet “Bess, you is my woman now” from “Porgy and Bess.” Schert will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Ach ich liebte, war so gluecklich” from “Die Entfuuehrung aus dem Serail.”

Donna Hatcher, professor of art and journalism, will also feature some of her favorite works of art during the event.
