COMPASS Placement Testing

Abraham Baldwin uses placement test results to determine your starting level in courses.

Who must take the test?

May I exempt the test?

  • Students with a College Preparatory Diploma may not be required to take all parts of the placement test if they:

         Scored 480 or above on SAT Verbal or
         Scored 400 or above on SAT Math or
         Scored 20 or above on ACT English or
         Scored 17 or above on ACT Math.

What about transfer students?

  • Since each transfer situation is different, please call (229)-391-4995 to find out if you need to take the placement test.

What should I do if I need to take the placement test?

  • All placement testing is scheduled by appointment and must be completed before you come to New Student Orientation and registration.

What do I need to bring when I take the test?

  • A photo ID is required to take the placement test.
  • An approved calculator is permitted for the math placement test.

  • Sample Test Questions:

  • How do my COMPASS Scores affect my academic program? 

    • Learning Support courses are designed to help students acquire the skills needed to succeed in college-level work.  

    1. Reading: Students with a COMPASS Reading score of 77 or less are placed in READ 0099.
    2. Writing: Students with a COMPASS Writing score of 59 or less are placed in ENGL 0099.
    3. Algebra and Pre-Algebra:
      1. Students whose majors require MATH 1111 or MATH 1101 (College Transfer Programs) are placed on the basis of their COMPASS Algebra score. Students enrolled in College Transfer Programs with a COMPASS Algebra score of 36 or less are placed in the two-course sequence of MATH 0097 and MAT 0099.
      2. Students whose majors require MATH 1002 or PNUR 1104 (Career and Technological Programs) are placed on the basis of their COMPASS Pre-Algebra score. Students enrolled in Career and Technology Programs with a COMPASS Pre-Algebra score of 34 or less are placed in MAT 0090.

    May I re-test if I am not satisfied with my scores?

    • Re-testing is allowed on a case-by-case basis but requires the approval of the Director of Student Success Programs. Students may NOT re-test after they have registered for classes at ABAC. A $25 fee is required and may be paid at the One Stop Shop Please call 229-391-4995 for information.
