For Fall 2010 LLC's Starting March 1, 2010

What in
the world is a Learning Community?
Students choose ABAC for a wide variety of reasons – challenging academics, a beautiful and historic campus, caring faculty members, premier on-campus housing facilities, are just a few features that make the College a special place. ABAC offers a number of Living/Learning Communities (LLC’s) for students who want to make a great experience even better!
Living/Learning Communities are groups of students who take three classes together during the fall semester of their freshman year. The classes are arranged around a common theme. Recent examples include Technology, Women’s Issues, and Leadership. LLC instructors coordinate assignments to provide students the opportunity to explore the theme from a variety of perspectives.
For example, the popular “You Might be a Leader if…” LLC includes English 1101, Communications 1100, and a special Leadership Seminar. All three classes prepare students to explore what it means to be a leader and provide hands-on leadership learning experience. Students and faculty participate in construction of a “Habitat for Humanity” house. They complete a Leadership Project that involves all three classes.
LLC students form friendships that continue through their time at ABAC and beyond. LLC members who live on campus are housed with others in their in ABAC’s beautiful “Lakeside” Residence Hall. This promotes a sense of community and provides opportunity for students to continue the learning experience beyond the classroom.
Students who choose Living/Learning Communities are more likely to get involved on campus. In fact, the current Student Government Association President participated in the “You Might be a Leader if…” LLC. Others serve as Community Assistants and ABAC Ambassadors. LLC students are more likely to return to ABAC to complete their degrees.
The Fall 2010 LLC’s are being formed now. Specific information and the on-line registration will be available no later than March 1, 2010
