Answers to Frequently Asked Questions |
1. What do I need to do to find a job?
The first step is to come to the Financial Aid Office (Student Center, second floor) to see if you are eligible for the Federal Work Study Program (FWSP). This is determined from the information you submitted on the FASFA Form (financial aid application.) The Federal Government determines your eligibility. After you have obtained this information, the Job Placement Office (Student Center, third floor) will let you know of the positions available on campus. If you are interested in any of the positions, you will be sent out to interview with the FWSP account monitor for that particular job. If you do not qualify for Work Study, there may be "regular" campus jobs that are open. If no jobs are available to you on campus, you can obtain a listing of off campus jobs from the bulletin board in Branch Student Center or by visiting www.abac.edu/jobplacement.
2. If I work on campus, how many hours can I work and how much can I earn?
All campus jobs limit you to a maximum of 15 hours a week, and each one pays $6.55 per hour, or $98.25 for a week. If you are eligible for FWSP the amount awarded must last through fall and spring semester. If you are eligible for $2000 that means you can earn $1000 in fall and $1000 in the spring. At $6.55/hour that comes to about 9.5 hours per week. If you work over hours in the fall you will decrease hours in spring.
3. If I work off campus, how many hours can I work and how much can I earn?
If you work off campus you can work as many hours as you want. Your employer will set your pay. Don't forget, although your employer may be willing to schedule you for 30 or more hours, this may not be what is best for you. It is hard to maintain a good GPA and work more than 20 hrs. per week.
4. If hired, what will I need to bring to the Job Placement Office?
Before anyone can begin work on campus, they must complete the online student worker orientation (www.abac.edu/jobplacement/jporientation) including 3 payroll forms and 2 trainings. Take the completed forms and training certificate to the Job Placement Office. In addition to the paperwork, all student workers must bring a copy of their Social Security Card and a picture ID (ABAC ID or Driver's License). No one will be allowed to begin work until these documents have been completed and filed.
5. What is the Federal Work Study Program and how do I get it?
FWSP is a government sponsored program that allows students to work for pay. In order to qualify, you must complete a FASFA Form with the Financial Aid Office. Eligibility is determined from factors such as loans acquired, grants and scholarships obtained, and income. ABAC does not determine your eligibility. The Federal Government determines your eligibility.
6. When is the earliest I can inquire about a job for the fall semester?
FWSP is usually not finalized by Financial Aid until the first week in August. Students are encouraged to monitor the job site to see what is posted, but none can be filled until after Work-Study funds have been released. The best time to look for on campus jobs is right after classes begin in August.
Off campus jobs are updated almost daily. Students should monitor this list until they have found something that interests them or until they have been hired. Unfortunately, we cannot hold jobs for students, nor will we be able to tell you about Fall jobs until late July or early August. Again, jobs that we are aware of will be posted at www.abac.edu/jobplacement .
7. Should I visit the Job Placement Office before school starts?
Students are always welcome, but no campus job information will be known until after the first week of each semester. There is no waiting list. The responsibility remains on the student to work with the Job Placement staff until they have obtained employment. Sometimes, this can be a lengthy process, given economic circumstances. Be assured that we will work hard to assist any student that needs to find employment.
