 Course Description

A course designed to assure a basic level of computer applications literacy to include word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, database, LAN, e-mail, and Internet utilization.

 Expected Course Outcomes:

 Upon completion of the course, the student will: 

  1. understand how information technology aids business decision making. 
  2. identify the components of a typical microcomputer system. 
  3. identify and describe the most widely used general microcomputer software applications, the difference between application software and system software and understand the role of operating system software. 
  4. demonstrate knowledge of computer hardware and software, including “multimedia” and be familiar with the legal, ethical, and privacy issues relating to the use of hardware and software in a business environment. 
  5. be familiar with computer networks and know the basic components of communications system to include e-mail, user interfaces, communications and the Internet. 
  6. effectively use application software which includes:
    1. word processing
    2. spreadsheet
    3. database management
    4. presentation software

 

 Teaching Methods:

  1. Students should plan to take notes, however, all material can be found in the texts or readings. Discussion is encouraged using the Bulletin Board and private e-mail
  2. Assignments will be periodically assigned to help support and supplement material found in the text. These assignments may require the application of various software packages.
  3. Quizzes: scheduled practice quizzes will be given to help ensure students stay up with assigned material.
  4. Exams: The exams will be closed book/note and will test assigned readings and material discussed in class or on-line.
  5. Internet: All material will be distributed on the Internet. Class notes, instructional material, and student assignments will be posted on in a class Website ( WebCT, Vista).  

 

 

Text/Materials: Textbooks are bundled at the bookstore which include:

  • Text: Shaffer/Carey/Finnegan/Adamski/Ageloff/Zimmerman/Zimmerman, CISM Fundamentals of Computer Applications, New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2010, First Course (Bookstore bundle Cheapest Price: Textbook and SAM testing software)

  • SAM Testing Software code for MS Office 2010:  included in bookstore bundle

  • You will need: a storage device for saving files: USB (flash drive) recommended 1 GB or higher.

Academic Dishonesty:

 **If this course is required in Area F of the University System of Georgia Core Curriculum. You should not expect it to transfer to a School of Business in a senior college or university within the system unless your grade is a “C” or better.

Class Attendance:

Regular classes: Students can miss no more than twice the number of days they attend class per week. (example: MWF can miss 6 days and TR classes can miss 4 days)  MWF classes: 3 tardies will constitute as one absence and TR classes: 2 tardies will constitute as one absence.  A reduction in a letter will apply if a student goes over allowed absences. .  Online students are required to communicate weekly in WebCT and submit a roster picture. 
Students attending without books or not participating will be considered absent.

On-line classes: Student must login WebCT weekly for attendance to remain in the class and submit a roster picture in WebCT.

 Course Policies:

Missed /Tests:

The student is responsible for keeping track of tests and due dates for assignments posted on the calendar. There are no makeup exams.  Any uncoordinated, unexcused missed exam will result in a score of 0 for that exam.  If you have a doctor's excuse, see me for other options.  You must call/e-mail the instructor within 24 hrs if you are unable to take an exam.

 

Classroom Respect:

1.  As a courtesy for to classmates and instructor in class, please do not talk, type, or print while the instructor is talking to the class or when a student is asking a question which pertains to the class.
2.  Refrain from “surfing” the Web and answering e-mail during class, unless directed by your instructor. Please do not view MYSpace or FaceBook during the scheduled class time.

No food and drink items are allowed in ANY computer labs.
