Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
(ABAC), a State College of the University System of Georgia, is located
in Tifton, Georgia. With a population of 16,000, Tifton has twice been named
one of the “100 best small towns in America.”
The institution opened in 1908 as the Second District A&M School. It
became the South Georgia A&M College in 1925 and the Georgia State College
for Men in 1929. In 1933 the college assumed its present title and joined
the University System of Georgia. ABAC was named for Abraham Baldwin, a
Georgia signer of the U.S. Constitution and the first president of the
University of Georgia.
With an annual fall enrollment of over 3,300 students, the college offers
bachelor’s degrees in Rural Studies, Diversified Agriculture, and Turfgrass
and Golf Course Management. ABAC also offers associate degrees in a
wide range of majors from nursing to forestry. The School of
Agriculture and Natural Resources is the largest school of study on the
campus, and nursing is the largest single major. Other Schools include
Business, Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Science and Mathematics, and Nursing
and Health Sciences. ABAC is accredited by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.
Surrounded by lakes and woodland, ABAC's 516-acre campus is one of the most
picturesque in Georgia. With over 1,300 students living on campus, the
college supports a strong program of extracurricular activities and
intercollegiate as well as intramural athletics. Cultural life at ABAC and
the surrounding area is enhanced through programs provided by the ABAC Arts
Connection.
ABAC has its own golf course, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a walking
track, and stables for students’ horses. The college also operates the
Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, located one mile from
the main campus.
