BASIC FUNCTION

 

The Librarian for Public Sevices provides reference assistance and library instruction to patrons (primarily the student body, faculty, and staff) and is responsible for developing and administering the Bibliographic Instruction program for the library, incorporating all available resources and technologies.  This position manages the entire Public Services area, which includes Circulation, Interlibrary Loan functions and Reference. This position supervises two full time employees (Public Services Assistant and Circulation Manager) and is responsible for developing policy and procedures for these areas in collaberation with the staff.  The person in this position will be responsible for maintaining the web site and developing and updating all Public Service publications.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

The Librarian for Public Services reports to the Director of Library Services.  When making decisions, this job has the latitude to consider alternatives within the constraints of well defined College and library practices and procedures.  However, when necessary, the incumbent may consider adding new procedures (consistent with current policies and in consultation with library staff) to achieve the goal of the department.  Generally, this goal is specified, but the incumbent may decide the best methods by which to accomplish it.  The person in this position will stay abreast of the developments in the field of Academic Librarianship by reading the professional literature and attending workshops and conferences.

 

The main focus of this position is providing and/or supervising the provision of public services functions at Baldwin Library.  As such, a strong customer service ethic, interpersonal and supervisory skills are required. The position requires familiarity with the various information resources available; it also requires a well developed ability to teach information literacy skills at an undergraduate level in one-to-one encounters or in a class setting.

 

Other duties that come under the purview of this position are the maintenance of the web page, development of resources that will promote library use and aid library patrons (pathfinders, paper and on-line; the union list of serials) and service on campus committees as needed.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø  Manages reference desk and provides instruction to library patrons

 

Ø  Develops and helps deliver the Bibliographic Instruction program

 

Ø  Collaborates with faculty and staff to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum

 

Ø  Manages Public Services functions of the library

 

Ø  Maintains and continually accesses and improves all library publications; web page, pathfinders, etc.

 

Ø  Prepares and updates instructional handouts for the reference desk

 

Ø  Serves as library liaison to one academic division and completes projects related to this division

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is not responsible for any budgetary activity.

 

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires a Master in Library and Information Science from a recognized institution.
