BASIC FUNCTION

The PSBO Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and marketing of classes and educational events for life-long learning (non-credit activities).  As a whole, this position initiates, plans, administers, and evaluates a broad range of instructional activities aimed at educating individuals of various ages and interests.

NATURE & SCOPE

Within the ABAC hierarchal structure, the PSBO Director assigns areas of work to the PSBO Program Coordinator.  The Program Coordinator understands what final product is expected of his/her work, but how it is accomplished is at his/her discretion.  The incumbent has the latitude to consider courses of action within well defined College practices and policies and may consider new procedures if necessary.  The Program Coordinator supervises 70 to 100 contracted employees, mainly continuing education instructors.

This position is in charge of planning life-long learning courses for ABAC and the community served by the College.  Much creativity is needed in order to fulfill this task; however, the incumbent must also have the ability to translate creative ideas into reality.  Additionally, long-term planning requires the incumbent to seek out actively future programs while current programs are being administered.  The incumbent must be able to balance the task of planning with the action of executing.

Much promotional work and public relations are required of the Program Coordinator.  Because many of the non-credit courses offered by the PSBO cater to non-traditional students in the surrounding community, the Program Coordinator must stay active in the area.  Networking in the community is essential to program promotion.  The incumbent produces brochures, flyers, and pamphlets for distribution and maintains a website for the program in addition to promoting the program via conversation.

Communication skills are essential for this position, and they affect every facet of it.  Communication skills provide a great aid in promotion of the program to prospective students, but they are also valuable in attracting choice instructors.  These skills are indispensable in communicating the goal of the department to a large number of contracted employees and the goal of specific courses to individual instructors.  Furthermore, communication skills allow the Program Coordinator to serve as a temporary replacement when an instructor is unavailable.

Fiscal experience is helpful to this position, as the incumbent must efficiently allocate funds for each continuing education course.  With a large number of course offerings, prioritization is necessary, and the incumbent must disburse funds in a manner which is beneficial to students yet returns a profit for the department.  The Program Coordinator must be able to discern wisely which areas need funding, and when they need it.
