BASIC FUNCTION |

The main
objective of this position is to install, deploy, maintain, troubleshoot, and
back up Windows and Linux based servers.
Maintaining network functionality plays a large role in this job. The incumbent works with workstation setup,
connectivity, and cleint/server interoperability. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The IT Network Support
Professional Support Specialist – Manager supervises the Network Systems
Administrator. While no subordinates
report to the Network Systems Administrator, the incumbent does manage several
projects independently. Server installation,
configuration, and administration are the focal points of this position. This position is critical to the
maintenance and security of the servers on campus. In order for the incumbent to perform
effectively, a good deal of continuing education in the information
technology sector is required. This
education is essential to the incumbent in network administration as well. The incumbent must display
a variety of skills in order to be successful. One of the most important traits that the
Network Systems Administrator can have is the ability to communicate
effectively on a variety of levels.
The incumbent must understand technical jargon; however, the incumbent
must be able to translate this jargon into a form that is understandable for
end users. Another necessary skill is
the ability to research answers.
Often, problems will arise which the Network Systems Administrator has
not experienced, and he/she will have to research and implement the solutions. A third essential characteristic is the
ability to be self-supervised and motivated.
He/She must decide what jobs need priority, when to do them, and how to
do them without micromanagement. |

Updates and
maintains servers Ø
Performs
scheduled backups of data on servers for disaster recovery and evaluates and
modifies disaster recovery procedures Ø
Determines need
for and installs new servers Ø
Evaluates and
determines workstation configurations and printer requirements for end users Ø
Assists in the
installation of network equipment and cabling and performs setups to meet
user needs Ø
Monitors the
campus network Ø
Assists in
evaluating, planning, and determining new projects and executes assigned
projects Ø
Maintains
current knowledge of the information technology profession through classes,
seminars, presentations, and published materials |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires two
years of college or vocational school and five to seven years of experience
in the field. The incumbent must also
display an understanding of servers, software, and environments. |
