BASIC FUNCTION |
|
|
|
The incumbent
is responsible for supervising personnel in the area of technology support,
including PC, server, voice over IP (VOIP), and media. This position also manages the areas of
network administration, network security, and project planning. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Chief Information (IT)
Officer is the direct supervisor of this position. Five to eight full- and part-time employees
report to the Network Support Specialist – Manager. This position requires a
high degree of problem solving ability.
Many unique problems arise on a routine basis, and it is the duty of
the Network Support Specialist – Manager to resolve these problems quickly
and efficiently. Often these problems
are not documented in support manuals, and it can require significant time
and ability to solve them. The nature of this position
means that the Network Support Specialist - Manager must possess excellent
communications skills. These skills
are imperative as the incumbent attempts to solve problems that employees
across campus are having. In addition,
interpersonal skills are used extensively to lead the team of employees that
the incumbent supervises. These employees must be motivated and directed
toward a common goal. Communication
skills are also utilized when outside companies are participants in projects. This position requires a
combination of education, training, and experience. It is a task and detail oriented job, with
many different tasks arising frequently.
Versatility and flexibility are attributes essential to success in
this position. It is also necessary
that the incumbent have an excellent understanding of new and emerging
technologies, as these technologies will effect the recommendations made by
the incumbent and the techniques used to solve problems. |

BUDGETARY
RESPONSIBILITIES |
|
The Network Support
Specialist – Manager is responsible for determining the total expenditures of
the information technology budget as it relates to PC, server, VOIP, network
equipment, and support contracts.
While this total varies from year to year, it is approximately
$20,000. This position is also
responsible for recommending special projects which have unusually large
budgets. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires two
years of college or a vocational school degree and seven to ten years of
experience in the field. The functions
of the position also necessitate significant server and software skills. |
