BASIC FUNCTION

 

The primary function of the Licensed Practical Nurse is to support the operation of the clinic by assessing patient illness in order to administer proper treatment.  The incumbent also has the responsibility of ordering supplies and medications for the clinic.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Licensed Practical Nurse reports to the Resource Manager of the Division of Nursing and Health Services.  The L.P.N. also works closely with the Division Chair.

 

This position requires the incumbent to fill a variety of tasks on a daily basis.  As such, self-direction is an important asset of the L.P.N.  Organizational and planning skills, along with the ability to prioritize, are essential.  With a large number of patients seeking treatment on a regular basis, the L.P.N. must make adequate judgments as to which patients need priority in treatment. 

 

The L.P.N. must practice fiscal responsibility.  It is the task of the incumbent to stock the clinic and labs, and it is important that this is done in a punctual and cost-effective manner. 

 

As the medical field is a service-oriented industry, the L.P.N. must display excellent interpersonal communication skills.  He/She must display a positive attitude to patients and make their visit a pleasant and helpful one.

 

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Assesses patients for treatment

 

Ø       Provides patient care, discharge instructions, and medications after treatment

 

Ø       Works with faculty instructors to set up skills laboratories

 

Ø       Restocks health center and skills laboratories

 

Ø       Orders all laboratory and clinical supplies and medications

 

Ø       Provides orientation for new students and monitors Kaplan Stars tests

 

Ø       Produces nurse bags for nursing students and pays bills for the health center

 

Ø       Performs clerical duties

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is responsible for purchasing materials for the health center and laboratories, paying bills, and monitoring monthly bank statements.  However, the incumbent has no responsibility regarding budget allocation decisions for the department.

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires some high school education, or equivalent experience, and one to three years of work experience in the field.  In addition, the position requires a L.P.N. license and a C.P.R. certification.
