BASIC FUNCTION

 

The Library Technical Assistant for Public Services provides reference assistance and library instruction to patrons (primarily the student body, faculty, and staff).  This position is also charged with replacing several other positions, including Circulation Desk Manager and Reference Librarian, when those employees are not available.  The incumbent also promotes library use by creating displays of new materials and providing interlibrary loan services.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

The Library Technical Assistant for Public Services reports to the Librarian for Public Services.  When making decisions, this job has the latitude to consider alternatives within the constraints of well defined College practices and procedures.  However, when necessary, the incumbent may consider adding new procedures (consistent with current policies) to achieve the goal of the department.  Generally, this goal is specified, but the incumbent may decide the best methods by which to accomplish it.   The incumbent supervises student workers in the area.

 

The main focus of this position is assisting library patrons.  As such, strong customer service and interpersonal skills are required.  A significant amount of research is performed, and the incumbent must be familiar with database and internet research.  Assisting library patrons at times requires demonstrations of specific techniques with which the incumbent must be familiar.

 

In addition, the Library Technical Assistant for Public Services is required to promote library use.  This includes creating displays for library events, promoting less-recognized benefits of the library, and showing a courteous attitude toward library patrons.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Assists at the reference desk and provides instruction to library patrons

 

Ø       Provides instruction on specific methods of bibliographic documentation and other research related topics for students

 

Ø       Completes requests for interlibrary loans

 

Ø       Promotes library sponsored events

 

Ø       Maintains reference stacks and reviews reference holdings

 

Ø       Prepares and updates instructional handouts for the reference desk

 

Ø       Serves as library liaison to one academic division and completes projects related to this division

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is not responsible for any budgetary activity.

 

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires a four-year college degree and some experience, but less than a year.
