BASIC FUNCTION |
|

|
The
incumbent serves as the circulation and reserve desk manager. The Library Assistant is responsible for
supervising student workers and training library staff on aspects of the
system that pertain to circulation and reserves. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Library Assistant
reports to the Public Service Librarian.
The incumbent supervises five to eight student workers. Work is regularly checked by the
supervisor, and most tasks follow an established procedure. However, the incumbent may choose which
procedures to follow depending on the situation. The majority of the Library
Assistant’s job takes place managing the circulation and reserves desk. This involves maintaining the circulation
calendar, charging and discharging materials, and collecting fees. Also, an extensive knowledge of the Voyager
program is utilized regularly. In
addition to using the program routinely, the Library Assistant also provides
training on it. This position provides a
great deal of interaction with library patrons. Inherent to this, the incumbent must
display excellent customer service skills.
There are many instances in which these interpersonal communication skills
prove invaluable. |

The Library Assistant is
responsible for collecting fees and fines from library patrons, but has no
responsibility regarding budget allocation decisions. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires two
years of college or vocational school education and less than one year of
work experience in the field. |
