Position Description – High School Equivalency Program/                                     College Assistance Migrant Program                     Recruiter

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:

High School Equivalency Program (HEP)/ College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) Recruiter

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Reports to:

HEP/CAMP Coordinator

Department:

HEP/CAMP (College Services and Human Resources)

Date Prepared:

June 2005

BASIC FUNCTION

The main focus of this position is making initial contact with prospective HEP/CAMP students.  In addition, this position is responsible for testing students, interviewing students, and ensuring that students qualify and meet all of the requirements needed for participation in the program.  The incumbent further aids potential students in the admissions process.

NATURE & SCOPE

The HEP/CAMP Recruiter reports to the HEP/CAMP Coordinator, who assigns recruitment goals.  Once these goals are assigned, the incumbent typically determines the methods necessary to reach them.   These methods typically follow well-defined College principles and precedents.  Although the tasks of this position are generally proceduralized, because every student presents a different situation, the incumbent has the latitude to determine which precedent or procedure to follow.  This position does not have the responsibility of supervising any other employees.

The HEP/CAMP deals mainly with migrant and seasonal agricultural workers.  In order to convince these potential students to join the program, the HEP/CAMP Recruiter must have an acute understanding of their culture and the challenges they face.  This position requires a great deal of flexibility and an attitude willing to accept challenges.  Many migrant workers are new to this type of educational setting, and often they come with various learning deficiencies (language, etc.).   The HEP/CAMP Recruiter must be able to address the concerns of these families and garner their trust in order for them to accept the program.  Unfortunately, due to these educational and communication deficiencies, a large majority of migrants that do apply do not meet the acceptance requirements.  The HEP/CAMP Recruiter must deal with this disappointment without losing motivation.

Inherently, the HEP/CAMP Recruiter must be a superior salesperson.  He/She must identify potential students and relate the advantages of the program to their needs.  The HEP/CAMP recruiter must be insightful and perceptive.  Outstanding communicative ability is essential to the success of this position.  Persistence is also a key trait.
