BASIC FUNCTION

 

 This position manages the golf course and 6-7 employees.  They schedule the day to day maintenance on the golf course, as well as the pro shop.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The golf course superintendent is a working supervisor and is responsible for the maintenance and management of ABAC’s Forest Lakes Golf Course. The course is a teaching and demonstration lab for experiential learning as well as functioning as a public golf course.  The superintendent is responsible for managing full- and part-time employees and student learners in maintenance activities including mowing, fertilization, irrigation, topdressing, aerating, bunker maintenance, cup changing, pest management, golf cart and equipment maintenance, etc. Also, the superintendent is responsible for managing the pro shop, golfers, budget, and golf tournaments (especially the Ag Classic Golf Tournament in October of each year).  Participation in collegiate networking activities such as tradeshows and conferences at the state and national levels is encouraged. The superintendent is supervised by the coordinator of turf and grounds and works closely with this individual in planning all maintenance and management activities on the golf course and managing student learners in labs.  Also, the superintendent works closely with all professors in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources as needed for specific student learning experiences in lab.  The golf course is open every day of the year except Christmas day, thus weekend and holiday work is required.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Golf Course Superintendent, along with the Agriculture and Forest Resources Division Chair, set the budget.  The superintendent is responsible for operating within that set budget.

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

An associate degree in Golf Course Management is required.  However, a bachelor degree in turf management is strongly suggested.  Also, two or more years of noted experience in golf course maintenance are required.  The successful applicant must have a current commercial pesticide applicator’s license.
