BASIC FUNCTION

The position of GEAR UP Coordinator is designed to oversee the operation of the GEAR UP grant.  The incumbent plans all program activities and ensures that the plans are implemented properly.  The incumbent also serves as the budget administrator of the GEAR UP grant, completes all related reports, and serves as a liaison between partners involved in GEAR UP.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Coordinator of GEAR UP reports to the Director of College Services and Human Resources, although the Coordinator generally functions independently.  The Coordinator supervises the GEAR UP staff of approximately five employees.

The unique nature of the GEAR UP program creates a number of tasks for the Coordinator.  Because federal money partially funds the program, the incumbent must make sure that grant guidelines and requirements are followed.  However, because it is also partially funded through partnerships, the incumbent must satisfy the partners.  Managing and overseeing grant funding and handling finances are important aspects of this position.

In addition, the Coordinator must work with many different individuals and organizations.  He/She must follow ABAC policy and establish relationships with administrators on campus.  Likewise, the incumbent must establish and maintain relationships with a number of different high school, middle school, and board of education administrators.  Requirements and policies for these partnering school systems must also be met.  Furthermore, the Coordinator must have experience working with students in at-risk situations.

The incumbent faces the challenge of modifying and remodeling programs to meet ever-changing goals of the GEAR UP program.  This requires creativity and innovation.  Moreover, flexibility and versatility must be chief qualifications for the Coordinator of GEAR UP.
