BASIC FUNCTION |

|
The
incumbent is responsible for assisting the Environmental Horticulture
Technology and Agriculture Professors in the teaching and training of students. This position functions to allow students
direct experimental training. The
incumbent is also responsible for the maintenance of equipment and facilities
used by the Division. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Environmental
Horticulture Technician reports to the Program Coordinator for Environmental
Horticulture. The incumbent supervises
approximately five student workers. The Environmental
Horticulture Technician performs a variety of tasks on a regular basis. He/She is assigned work by various faculty members,
and it is his/her duty to complete that work in an efficient manner. Because this position requires working with
many different individuals, the incumbent must be flexible and possess
adequate communication skills. In
addition, the incumbent must be able to prioritize activities according to
their urgency. A primary duty of the
Environmental Horticulture Technician is preparing and presenting laboratory
exercises for students in the department.
This includes obtaining the materials necessary and helping students
with especially difficult or complicated exercises. Not only must the Environmental
Horticulture Technician have a working knowledge of the subject matter, but
the incumbent must also truly desire student success in order to be effective
in this role. The incumbent also serves
as supervisor for students working on turfgrass projects. These student workers look to the incumbent
for direction and assistance in managing turfgrass on athletic fields and
golf courses. This requires the
incumbent to have a thorough understanding of turfgrass management,
pesticides, and irrigation practices.
In addition, it requires responsibility and an ability to effectively
motivate and communicate methods to students. The Environmental
Horticulture Technician should have experience in greenhouse and nursery
management. This requires a
familiarity with greenhouse equipment and ornamental plant management. The incumbent must keep abreast of current
issues and technologies in the industry in order to manage the greenhouse in
an effective and practical manner. |

Obtains
supplies, prepares laboratory exercises, and assists in teaching these
laboratory exercises Ø
Manages several
turf plots, including the golf driving range and practice facility Ø
Trains,
supervises, and coordinates student workers and independent study students at
various training areas on campus Ø
Orders supplies
and assists in managing the yearly budget Ø
Responsible for
pesticide applications Ø
Maintains,
repairs, and operates all equipment valued at over $300,000 Ø
Functions in a
student affairs capacity as club advisor and student recruiter Ø
Serves in other
roles as the need arises, including driver and decorator |

The incumbent is
responsible for ordering and documenting supplies needed for the program. While the incumbent helps monitor the
budget, he/she has no responsibility in budget allocation for the Division. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires two
years of college or vocational school education and one to three years of
work experience in the field. In
addition, a pesticide applicator license is required. |
