BASIC FUNCTION |

|
The Division
Chair is tasked with providing management and leadership for the faculty and
staff of the Division. This postion
evaluates the faculty, and he/she implements the Division’s unit plan in
accordance with the College’s strategic plan and mission. The incumbent manages the budget for the Division
and is responsible for the operation and upkeep of the Division’s facilities.
In addition, the incumbent has the
responsibility of teaching courses and responding to student needs and
requests. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Chair of the Division
of Social Sciences reports to the Vice President and Dean of Academic
Affairs. He/She supervises 25 to 30
faculty and staff members. The incumbent must lead a
team of employees toward a goal of promoting the Division of Social Sciences
while not overstepping the goals of the College as a whole. The incumbent must decide the priorities of
the Division and lead the employees in the proper direction. Similarly, the incumbent must decide fiscal
priorities and allocate accordingly.
While the goal of advancing the Division is understood, it is the job
of the incumbent to choose the route which the Division will follow to
achieve this goal. A major task of this
position is faculty evaluations. The
faculty is often stylistically and ideologically diverse, while similar in
area of study. This can present
difficulty in objective evaluation, and significant consideration is needed
when judging performance. Interpersonal skill is
imperative in this position. The
Division Chair must address the concerns of students, faculty, and staff who
often have differing positions on issues.
The incumbent must display wisdom in how he/she handles these
situations. Furthermore, the incumbent
must have knowledge for the most current instruction techniques, as teaching
and advising are a noteworthy aspect of this position. The incumbent must be able to relate to a
varied assortment of students and foster their educational experience. |

BUDGETARY
RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent is responsible for the proper
administration of the divisional budget of approximately $900,000. The Division Chair must be able to set
priorities for the division and allocate resources in a manner that will best
aid in the achievement of the goals of the division. |
