BASIC FUNCTION |

|
The major
responsiblities of the Division Chair are to manage the administrative,
fiscal, and instructional resources of the Division. This includes, but is not limited to,
hiring full-time and adjunct faculty, providing for the ongoing professional
develpoment and annual evaluation of the faculty, overseeing curriculum
develoment and assessment, teaching classes in the Division, and responding
to student needs as they arise. The
Division Chair is responsible for implementing unit goals that correspond the
to stategic goals and mission of ABAC. |

NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Chair of the Division
of Science and Mathematics reports to the Vice President and Dean of Academic
Affairs. The incumbent is the
supervisor of approximately 40 faculty, staff, and student workers. This position requires a
broad knowledge of all of the disciplines in the division. The incumbent is tasked with dividing
resources within the department, and it is important that the Division Chair
be fluent in all of the disciplines in order to make optimal decisions. The incumbent must set priorities for the
division and allocate funds appropriately.
A primary responsibility of
the incumbent is managing subordinates in a team setting. The incumbent must unite faculty on a
common goal and work to achieve it.
While the Division Chair may work within the Division to accomplish
the goal using methods, which he/she deems appropriate, he/she must always
keep the primary focus of the College in mind. Also, the incumbent spends a considerable
amount of time evaluating faculty performance, curriculum, and programs. Additionally, the Division
Chair is expected to teach classes in the Division and advise students. At other times, the Division Chair deals
with student issues, concerns, and complaints. In instances where faculty and students are
in conflict, the incumbent is often expected to intervene. The incumbent must work to ensure that the
students in the Division are receiving a high-quality education. |

BUDGETARY
RESPONSIBILITIES The incumbent is responsible for the divisional
budget of approximately $1.5 million.
The Division Chair must be able to set priorities and allocate funds
in accordance with the goals of the division. |
