POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title:

Division Chair, Nursing and Health Services

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Reports to:

Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs

Department:

Academic Affairs

Date Prepared:

June 2005

BASIC FUNCTION

The major responsiblities of the Division Chair are to manage the administrative, fiscal, and instructional resources of the Division.  This includes, but is not limited to, hiring full-time and adjunct faculty, providing for the ongoing professional develpoment and annual evaluation of the faculty, overseeing curriculum develoment and assessment, teaching classes in the Division, and responding to student needs as they arise.  The Division Chair is responsible for implementing unit goals that correspond the to stategic goals and mission of ABAC.

NATURE & SCOPE

The Chair of the Division of Nursing and Health Services reports directly to the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs; however, most work is inherent in the accreditation guidelines of the program and self-assigned.  Reporting to the Chair are 20 to 25 faculty and staff.

The most significant portion of the incumbent’s job lies in meeting accreditation guidelines and standards, which are reviewed by the accreditation agencies one to four times per year.  With this goal in mind, the Chair must maximize the limited personnel resources to accommodate increasing student numbers.  This presents the challenge of recruiting highly skilled faculty and staff in order to keep student – faculty ratios low.  It is at the discretion of the incumbent, within the constraints of well-defined College practices and policies, to determine the procedures which will achieve the goals of the department.

The incumbent spends considerable time in the daily operations of the Health Center.  Managing the complex requires a high knowledge of current nursing practices, as well as budgetary and administrative skill.  Furthermore, the incumbent must remain current in political issues facing the health care industry, as they may directly affect educational and clinical practices and objectives.

In addition, the Chair must practice a high level of interpersonal communication skill in order to motivate and lead the department toward its goals.  This skill is also necessary in teaching and advising settings.  The incumbent also provides oversight in the student recruitment and admissions process.
