BASIC FUNCTION

 

The major responsiblities of the Division Chair are to manage the administrative, fiscal, and instructional resources of the Division.  This includes, but is not limited to, hiring full-time and adjunct faculty, providing for the ongoing professional develpoment and annual evaluation of the faculty, overseeing curriculum develoment and assessment, teaching classes in the Division, and responding to student needs as they arise.  The Division Chair is responsible for implementing unit goals that correspond the to stategic goals and mission of ABAC.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Chair of the Division of Humanities is supervised by the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs.

The Division Chair manages 60 to 65 employees, including full- and part-time faculty of the division, employees of the ABAC Arts Connection, and student workers.

 

The Division Chair must show an ability to lead an extremely diverse group of employees toward a common aim.  The nature of the humanities leads to this diversity, as the groups that make up this area span the spectrum of interests but are all joined by the common theme of relation to the arts.  Often, this variety of interests leads to disputes, and the Division Chair must work to reach compromises in order to achieve the objectives of the Division and the College.

 

In addition, this position requires a close relationship with the ABAC Arts Connection.   While the ABAC Arts Connection is primarily funded by private sources, it provides numerous opportunities for students and faculty of the Division of Humanities.  Also, the ABAC Arts connection facilitates interaction with various community groups and individuals otherwise not associated with the college.  It is essential that the Division Chair use this publicity and the contacts in generates for the betterment of the division and College.

 

This position necessitates a knowledge of ABAC and University System of Georgia policy, as this policy must be relied upon in operations.  The incumbent must also follow accreditation standards and employment law as decisions are made.  However, the incumbent has the latitude within the division to establish the procedures that will allow the division to reach its goals. 

 

The Division Chair must also maintain knowledge of the most current instructional techniques, as he/she teaches classes within the division.  Similarly, the incumbent also devotes a portion of time to advisement and addressing the needs of students.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Hires, directs, and evaluates faculty

 

Ø       Directs ongoing curriculum development

 

Ø       Manages the public resources of the Division and supervises the solicitation of private resources

 

Ø       Responds to student needs and problems as they arise and serves as an advisor to students in the Division

 

Ø       Promotes the Division and College to prospective students and attends orientations and recruitment functions

 

Ø       Schedules classes and supervises material orders

 

Ø       Teaches classes in the Division

 

Ø       Assesses student learning within the Division

 

Ø       Represents ABAC on various Board of Regents advisory committees

 

Ø       Promotes extracurricular arts activities

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is responsible for the allocation of several budgets totaling approximately $2.1 million.  This includes the division budget, the music budget, the ABAC Arts Connection Budget, and various arts series budgets.

 

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires and advanced degree and five to seven years work experience in the field.
