BASIC FUNCTION

 

The Division Chair is tasked with providing management and leadership for the faculty and staff of the Division.  This postion evaluates the faculty, and he/she implements the Division’s unit plan in accordance with the College’s strategic plan and mission.  The incumbent manages the budget for the Division and is responsible for the operation and upkeep of the Division’s facilities.  In addition, the incumbent has the responsibility of teaching courses and responding to student needs and requests.

 

 

NATURE & SCOPE

 

The Chair of the Division of Business Administration reports to the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs.  He/She is the supervisor of 20 to 25 faculty, staff, and student workers.

 

A critical responsibility of this position is advocating the specific needs of the Division within the context of the needs of the total campus while maintaining the posture of a team player.  The Division Chair is in essence a member of two teams.  One of those teams is the campus-wide leadership.  The incumbent is responsible for reporting on the Division of Business Administration to this group and fulfilling the mission of the College.  The second team of which he/she is a part is the Division of Business Administration.  The incumbent must work to motivate and unite the faculty of the Division to work toward goals that correspond with those of the entire Institution.  The Division Chair must manage a diverse faculty daily, and aid them in coalescing around a common purpose.

 

Another duty of this position involves the budgeting process.  The incumbent must recognize the areas where the allocation of resources will most effectively advance the department and appropriately disseminate these funds.  Related to the budgeting process, the incumbent is charged with identifying and hiring appropriately credentialed and effective part-time faculty.  This also requires knowledge of the ABAC and University System of Georgia policy and an understanding of employment law.

 

This position requires a broad perspective of the business discipline.  In order to most effectively develop and review programs and curriculum, it is imperative that the Division Chair have a knowledgeable background in the affairs of the business community.  Similarly, the incumbent must have a knowledge of the latest instructional technologies in order to best serve the students of the division. 

 

This position also involves a great deal of student related issues.  The incumbent must serve as an academic advisor to students and address the concerns and complaints of students.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Ø       Directs, supervises, and evaluates faculty

 

Ø       Advises and counsels students and responds to student concerns and issues

 

Ø       Promotes the Division to prospective students

 

Ø       Monitors public resources of the Division and solicits private resources for the Division

 

Ø       Develops and reviews academic curriculum and programs

 

Ø       Assesses student learning within the Division and conducts other research related to the Institution

 

Ø       Teaches classes in discipline

 

Ø       Schedules Divisional classes and supervises material selection

 

Ø       Interacts with the local business community in order to best meet their needs

 

 

 

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is responsible for the divisional budget of approximately $750,000.  The Division Chair is responsible for setting priorities for annual appropriation and determining faculty and staff pay raises.  This position also involves evaluating budget statements, making decisions as to the allocation of funds between budget components, and making recommendations for annual revisions.

 

 

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires and advanced degree and seven to ten years of work experience in the field.
