BASIC FUNCTION |
|
|
|
This
position plans and adminsters the operations of the Baldwin Library,
including internal operations, services, acquisitions, and the organization
and evaluation of resources. The
position also provides reference assistance and library instruction, and the
incumbent participates in professional development activities. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Library Director
reports to the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. However, the incumbent has the autonomy to
make most decisions regarding the library, with the exception of those that
will have a large effect on the ABAC community. The Library Director is the supervisor of 10
to 15 employees, including staff and student workers. The Library Director has a
significant amount of responsibility to supervise the staff of the library.
The incumbent is responsible for determining when and how many staff members
are needed for work. The Library
Director also is responsible that these staff members serve the students and
faculty of the College in and efficient and congenial manner. This position requires significant ability
as a communicator in order to motivate the library staff and encourage them
to advance the goals of the library and the College. This position requires a
great deal of creativity to maximize results from the allocated
resources. The Library Director spends
time in the budgeting process to determine what areas of the library will
require the most attention. Staffing
and collection development are important considerations in this budgeting
process. In addition, it is
important that the incumbent incorporate the opinions of faculty in
collections development. This ensures
that the needs of the College will be met by the library. Continual updating of collections and
databases of learning resources is required. Furthermore, the Library
Director must have administrative experience in order to determine the
direction and objectives of the department.
Organization is a key characteristic of this position, as many
activities demand attention on a daily basis.
Also, the incumbent must be able to determine priorities and schedule
activities accordingly. |

maintaining statistics and records, and selecting vendors for materials and

BUDGETARY
RESPONSIBILITIES This position Oversees
the library budget of approximately $370,000.
The incumbent monitors operating and acquisitions expenditures to
ensure that a unit does not overspend its budget. |

SPECIALIZED
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED |
|
This position requires a
Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited school and
five to seven years of work experience in the field. |
