BASIC FUNCTION |

|
This
position has the responsibility for the oversight of the operation of the
Upward Bound Program. The purpose of
the program is to prepare high school students for successful post-secondary
matriculation. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE The Director of TRIO
Programs is the immediate supervisor of the Director of Upward Bound. Approximately 50 employees report to the
Director of Upward Bound. Upward Bound is a program
that focuses on preparing high school students for post-secondary
education. Resources for the program
come from federal grants. As such, it
is imperative that the Director of Upward Bound be well versed in the
practice of grant writing. The
incumbent must also be mindful of the program’s compliance with federal policies
and regulations. The incumbent is tasked
with supervising a sizable staff. With
such a responsibility, it is necessary that the Director of Upward Bound be
an effective team manager. The motivation
of a large number of people to accomplish a common objective is the task of
this position. A main thrust of the Upward
Bound program occurs during the summer months, when high schools are not in
session. At this time, the College
plays host to a number of high school students. The oversight of this facet
of the program falls to the Director of Upward Bound. He/She must coordinate all of the
activities, including supervising participants, providing lodging, and
providing meals. In addition, the
incumbent must secure funding for these activities. The Director of Upward
Bound must also practice sound fiscal management. He/She must maximize the impact of an
allotted budget. If there is a
shortage in the budget, the incumbent must be able to distinguish priorities
and allocate funds appropriately. All programs
must be funded from this budget, so it is essential that it is managed wisely. Another duty of the
incumbent is the promotion of the Upward Bound program to potential
participants and the retention of current students. This requires innovative thinking and a
significant amount of exertion in implementing new strategies and evaluating
existing approaches. The Director must
keep track of current trends and the needs of students in order to make
Upward Bound as attractive as possible. |
