BASIC
FUNCTION |
|
This position is responsible for the
leadership, management, development, and coordination of Student Life and
Housing. This position has direct
responsibilities over student’s activities (including the enforcement of the
student code of conduct) and student housing. |
|
NATURE
& SCOPE |
|
The Director of Student
Life and Housing reports to the Vice President of Student and Enrollment
Services. However, much of the
incumbent’s work is either self-assigned or dictated by student activities,
and it is rarely reviewed by superiors.
Approximately 25 to 30 employees report to the incumbent. The Director of Student
Life and Housing is tasked with leading his/her departmental team toward
goals that will advance the mission of the College and aid the student
community. This position has the
latitude to consider courses of action within broad College policies and short-term
objectives. The incumbent has the autonomy
to determine what new College procedures are needed for specific situations. Although general departmental goals are in
place, the incumbent must establish the plan, determine the priorities, and
prescribe the process for achieving objectives. A major focus of this
position is the oversight of student judicial management. Thus, the individual must be an effective
judge of character and ably discern what judgment should be made in each
particular circumstance. Patience and
insight are required in order to make proper decisions in this area, and
communication skills aid the incumbent in counseling and interviewing
students. Creativity and innovation
are characteristics of the Director of Student Life and Housing. The incumbent is in charge of student
leadership development, and consequently must continuously develop new
activities that will strengthen the leadership ability of students. This area of extracurricular development is
extremely important in producing ABAC graduates ready for success in their
careers, and a leader who can take advantage of the brief opportunity to
influence students is needed for this position. Furthermore, the incumbent
must demonstrate superior organizational ability in order to balance the
previously outlined tasks with the job of managing student housing for over
800 residents. This can be an enormous
job, and the incumbent must make priorities and effectively delegate
responsibility in order to assure that the department will continue running
smoothly. |
